Overview
Provides additional support in key administrative areas including substitute instructor coordination, daily payroll check-ins & attendance audits, facility walkthroughs, equipment requests, and other daily operational duties. The role also includes group fitness class instruction and/or conduction of Personal Training services. Provides excellent service to members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement following YMCA policies and procedures.
Responsible for providing safe, effective programming for members in group fitness classes.

Responsibilities- Finding Substitutes:
Lead instructors will be responsible for promptly finding substitutes for their designated branches, ensuring that classes are never canceled or disrupted. May step in for classes needing coverage. - Payroll Check-Ins:
Daily check-ins to verify payroll accuracy will prevent discrepancies and ensure timely payment for all staff. - Facility Walkthroughs:
Regular inspections will maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety, timeliness, and equipment functionality. - Equipment Requests:
Lead instructors will manage and expedite equipment requests, ensuring all necessary materials are available and operational. - Class audits:
Attend classes weekly to ensure quality control and instructor engagement. - Leads group fitness classes to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
- Conducts energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes.
- Builds effective relationships with members; helps members connect within the YMCA community.
- Maintains working knowledge of up-to-date health, fitness, and wellness industry standards and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- Reports regular, accurate, up-to-date class attendance records.
- Follows YMCA and Health & Wellness Department policies and procedures; responds to emergencies as needed.
- Communicates effectively and comports professionally with team members and staff; actively responds to Health & Wellness Department communications promptly.
- Performs various duties for the Health & Wellness Department as requested by the Health & Wellness Director & Coordinator.
- Assists with staff development and hiring. May be asked to participate in interview auditions.
- Assists with member systems performance and communication.
Minimum Qualifications
:
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification (must have a hands‑on, live component)
- Current Group Fitness Instructor and/or Personal Trainer Certification by a Nationally Accredited Certifying Agency (i.e. ACSM, NASM, AFAA, ACE, NESTA); or current Specialty Instructor Certification (i.e. Cycling, Yoga Alliance, Pilates, Zumba®, Tai Chi); or Bachelor’s degree in related field (i.e. Kinesiology, Dance, Health Science, Child Development, Public Administration – Non-Profit Organization)
- Experience teaching in a group fitness class setting
Preferred Qualifications
:
- Ability to teach 2+ different group fitness class formats.
- Experience working in a health club and/or community center environment.
- Experience working with a variety of exercise populations (Senior population preferable). Availability to sub Group Fitness Schedule classes for Health & Wellness staff.
