Substitute Shelter Staff - Wind Youth Services

Part-time

Wind Youth Services, a subsidiary of Goodwill Industries, provides supportive services and opportunities to youth experiencing homelessness as they pursue self‑determined lives of stability and independence.

Wind Youth Services (Wind) believes that promoting the safety, shelter, and self‑determination of all youth experiencing homelessness, including those who are unstably or unsafely housed—regardless of their ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, sobriety status, engagement in the sex trades, and legal history—is fundamental not only to their human rights, but also to the promotion of a more socially just and equitable society.

Responsibilities

Direct Care of Youth
  • Instructs, directs, provides guidance, and encourages the youth in the shelter.
  • Assists the youth, as needed, in the performance of regular daily activities including bed making, personal hygiene, room cleaning, and all other assigned chores.
  • Instructs and encourages the youth in daily recreational activities.
  • Maintains behavioral management of all situations. Provides any necessary proactive crisis interventions.
  • Identifies and ensures proper and timely documentation/notification of any safety concerns, emergencies, situations or general maintenance needs of the Wind Shelters and grounds to ensure compliance with any and all safety, regulatory and health standards.
  • Immediately reports to the Shelter Program Coordinator, Director of Programs and/or Executive Director any issues regarding safety of the children, safety of the Wind Shelters or any identified future danger.
  • Disperses and records prescribed and non‑prescribed medications according to policies and procedures.
  • Ensures food is prepared and served according to the schedule, menu and in an appropriate manner and that cleanup is completed after each meal.
  • Ensures the Wind Shelters are cleaned in a timely, thorough and efficient manner.
  • Follows personal rights guidelines at all times.
  • Assists in the intake, orientation, and discharge of youth to the Wind Shelters.
  • Assures adequate communication of youth information both internally and externally.
  • Attends bi‑weekly meetings with Shelter Program Coordinator, Youth Advocates, and other Shelter Workers to ensure effective program structure and case plans are being carried out.
  • Safely coordinates transportation and provides transports for youth as needed.
Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience working with at‑risk youth and the homeless population preferred.
  • Skill to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Skill to listen attentively to residents, co‑workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in a logical, responsible, timely and compassionate manner.
  • Knowledge of basic Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a culturally diverse resident population and work force.
  • Ability to work with community and outside agencies in a collaborative and cooperative manner.
  • Able to report to work on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Positive approach, can‑do attitude, sense of humor, ability to be flexible.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills; ability to trouble‑shoot and triage.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and goals of Wind Youth Services.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid California driver’s license & Proof of Insurance.
  • Must receive and pass the CPR/First Aid within the first three months of employment.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
Position Information
  • $12.00-$14.00 per hour
  • Graveyard Shift/On Call
