Job Summary
Under direction and with independent professional responsibility, Human Services Social Workers with a Master’s Degree provide direct public social services to clients. The role addresses complex individual and family problems and serves as a casework consultant to staff.

- Social casework principles, group work and community organization
- Social problems requiring community resources
- Criminal justice and victim‑witness program procedures
- Crisis intervention techniques
- Research and analysis methods for social services programs
- Individual and group behavior dynamics
- Medical, psychological and socioeconomic conditions affecting services
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
- Communicate effectively with diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
- Work effectively with varied life styles and attitudes
- Exercise tact in interpersonal situations
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- Interview across diverse circumstances
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with clients, staff and agencies
- Interpret public social service programs for clients
- Maintain composure under stress and analyze situations accurately
- Write clear, concise reports and communications
- Organize schedules and budgets, and keep accurate records
- Demonstrate skill in applying community resources and social work methods to complex cases
- Provide casework consultation and leadership in social casework methodologies
- A Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited institution
- OR a Master’s Degree that meets the educational requirements for a Marriage and Family Therapist or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor license issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Behavioral Science Examiners
- OR current enrollment in the final semester of an accredited Master’s program in social work or a related field that meets the above licensing criteria
Criminal History/Background: Candidate must not have a felony or misdemeanor that impairs job performance unless mitigating circumstances exist. Background checks include fingerprinting and may involve reference, credit, and license verification.
Driver’s License: A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher may be required. Disability exemptions are considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
Child and Elder Abuse Reporting: Person selected must sign a statement complying with California Penal and Welfare codes regarding child and elder abuse reporting.
Physical Requirements- Sit for up to one hour while driving to home visits
- Climb flights of stairs to reach residence
- Lift infants and toddlers up to 40 pounds
- Carry automobile child safety seats
- Have sufficient vision to assess client and home environment
- Exposure to hostile, emotionally disturbed or mentally ill persons and confrontational interpersonal situations
- Work in high‑crime areas of the community
- Work during non‑routine hours, standby and/or callback
- Work in substandard living areas with exposure to communicable diseases
- Work outdoors in all climatic conditions, including very hot or cold weather
The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.
