Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
The Position
Under general supervision, diagnoses, repairs, maintains, and services gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternatively fueled vehicles including medium and heavy duty trucks, buses, construction equipment, and diesel‑driven generators.
Salary & Incentives
Annual base salary: $84,480.48 – $93,124.80 USD.
- 5% maximum incentive pay for qualifying Truck Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Certifications.
- 1% maximum incentive pay for Advanced (ASE) Certifications F1 and/or L2.
- $35 bi‑weekly Technician Tool Allowance.
- Longevity pay: 4.0% for employees with 10 years of County employment.
- Eligibility for Vacation Cash‑In policy (up to 40 hours annually).
Responsibilities
- Diagnose technical problems and repair gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternatively fueled vehicles.
- Perform maintenance, repair, and adjustments using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Read and interpret automotive and equipment manuals and schematics.
- Maintain safety procedures and accurate repair records.
- Ensure safe operation of generators, including relocating them as needed.
- Communicate clearly and maintain cooperative workplace relationships.
Knowledge & Ability
- Fundamental principles of internal combustion engines, hydraulic/air brake systems, electrical systems, and transmission mechanics.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and repair tools.
- Ability to read schematics and service procedures.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Employment Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Three years of full‑time paid experience diagnosing and repairing vehicles such as automobiles, light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks, buses, or construction equipment.
- OR three years of full‑time paid experience in the Sacramento County Fleet Service Worker class.
- Coursework in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Heavy Maintenance Equipment Repair, or related field may substitute up to two years of required experience, based on 2.5 semester units (3.75 quarter units) equaling one month of experience.
General Qualifications
- Constitutional requirement of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher.
- Ability to obtain hazardous materials or tank vehicle endorsements if required.
- Substantial background and criminal record checks.
- Capacity to meet physical requirements and working conditions described below.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and transport items up to 100 lbs.
- Work in cramped spaces, awkward body positions, and around high noise levels.
- Climb ladders and work at heights of six feet or more.
- Work outside in all weather conditions.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to exhaust fumes, chemicals, hazardous waste, solvents, asbestos, and welding torches.
- Work on high noise levels and in close‑space environments.
- Shift work including day, swing, and graveyard shifts.
Probationary Period
Six (6) months.
