Overview
In a non-career and training capacity, to perform heavy manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets and other facilities and to operate light trucks, and medium street construction and maintenance equipment.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis is the sub-entry and training level class in the series. Incumbents perform the less difficult work and are considered to be in a training capacity. They receive direct supervision and are not expected to perform the full range of duties assigned to the journey level. Incumbents who successfully complete a two-year training program will be transitioned into the Street Construction Laborer class as a probationary employee.
SupervisionReceieved and Exerised
Immediate supervision is provided by a Street Maintenance Supervisor. Lead direction may be provided by a Street Construction Equipment Operator.
Responsibilities- Learn to spread asphaltic road building material over road surface by shoveling, raking, and brushing material to correct thickness.
- Learn to crack seal, patch, oil, and seal road surfaces.
- Learn to use various hand tools such as shovel, pick, mattock, axe, and broom.
- Learn to operate a jackhammer, other pneumatic tools, and various power tools.
- Learn to repair and patch curbs, gutters, bridge decks, headwalls, sidewalks, and perform related concrete work.
- Check brakes, lights, tires, fuel, oil level, and auxiliary equipment as required, and make minor field repairs and adjustments.
- Clean, adjust, and service tools and equipment.
- Set out and pick up barricades and warning signs.
- Serve as flag person on street work projects.
- Sand bag various locations for flood protection.
- Learn to operate four to ten-yard dump trucks, water tank trucks, and a variety of street construction and maintenance equipment which may include front end loaders, spreaders, pavement rollers, tractors, and distributor trucks.
- Learn to operate acetylene torch.
- Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.
- Methods, materials, and tools used in the trade.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn all of the necessary knowledge and skills required of the street construction trade.
- Perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
- Perform work under adverse working conditions such as bad weather.
- Work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary to resolve emergency problems.
Education

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
Experience
:
None required.
Driver License
:
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- Possession of a Class B Driver License is required by the end of the two-year training period to transition into the Street Construction Laborer classification. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Assessment:
If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test.
Residency Requirement:
Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.
