Position: ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES INTERN
Job Description and Duties

Do you want an exciting, dynamic position working with one of California's most charismatic wildlife species? Do you want to learn field biology skills as well as how to resolve human-wildlife conflicts?

The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region is seeking a motivated individual to assist with the state's growing Gray Wolf conservation program.

This position entails assisting the state wolf biologists in determining the distribution and abundance of Gray Wolves in northern California and with efforts to prevent Gray Wolf conflicts with livestock production. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience working independently and as part of a small team, driving 4-wheel drive and/or all-terrain vehicles, setting up and monitoring trail cameras, surveying for Gray Wolf tracks, scats and other sign, and deploying non-lethal deterrents measures to prevent Gray Wolf conflicts with livestock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist with ground-based surveys to document the distribution and abundance of Gray Wolves, including camera traps, hand-held telemetry, and survey for tracks, scat and other sign.

Assist staff biologists with Gray Wolf capture and telemetry collaring efforts.

Collect, manage and summarize field data, including camera trap videos and biological samples.

Assist with investigations of Gray Wolf sightings and depredations.

Assist with the deployment of non-lethal measures to deter Gray Wolves from livestock areas.

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification.

Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

* Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.

* Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.

* Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.

* Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.

Working Conditions

This position requires extensive time in the field driving on dirt roads, using 4-wheel drive vehicles and/or all-terrain vehicles, and hiking in steep and rugged terrain under potentially adverse weather conditions. Position requires ability to lift 40 pounds, as well as physical strength and agility to hike with a backpack and/or other gear and to build and remove temporary fencing. The position may require irregular work hours including weekends and holidays.

Extensive overnight travel and camping in remote areas is required. This position regularly requires the use of a computer for several hours at a time in the office. Periods of sitting, standing, and walking in the office are required. Use of a state-owned vehicle for travel is required between remote facilities and field sites where public transportation is not readily available.

This position may be required to sometimes wear a uniform.
