Overview

Deputy Director – Sacramento or Los Angeles, CA (Hybrid)

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Director will work to fulfill the organizational mission through streamlining and improving internal systems to be more efficient and effective, working on short- and long-term organizational planning, and program development. Specific duties range from development (helping create, develop, fund and nurture new programs) to administration (systems improvements, reporting, board management), and performance management (mentoring, career progression, staff management, evaluation).

The Deputy Director will partner closely with the ED to chart Health Access’s future growth and strategic responses to build power and run efficiently. The Deputy Director will aim to keep the organization functioning to its highest capacity.

Under the direction of the ED, the Deputy Director will assist in the management of the supervisory staff of the organization, including the setting and monitoring of both process and outcome goals, developing and mentoring staff, as well as ensuring the organization accomplishes tasks to meet its overall goals. The position will also partner closely with the Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Chief Communications Officer (CCO).

This position is hybrid, with occasional in-person work based at Health Access' Sacramento or Los Angeles headquarters. There may be occasional travel within and outside of the state.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning
    • Partner with the ED and COO and CCO to coordinate strategic planning with the guidance of the boards, staff, and consultants.
    • In collaboration with the ED, provide support, oversight, and quality control for the grant writing process, and contribute to the grant writing process as needed.
    • In collaboration with the COO and CCO, develop and implement strategy for all annual fundraising efforts to support the organization's general operations and specific campaigns and programs.
    • Engage in program design and development with Department Directors as it relates to the pursuit of new funding opportunities and the preparation of funding proposals.
    • Strengthening and professionalizing internal operations and systems that support people, programs, and organizational growth.
    • Assess the strengths of individuals and provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to hone those strengths and identify areas for improvement.
    • Develop and enhance Health Access’ relationships with key constituencies via networking, public speaking, presenting, and other relationship-building activities.
  • Program Development
    • Lead efforts to evaluate, improve, and expand programmatic offerings and assess organizational capacity to take on new work.
    • Work with policy, organizing, communications, Network, and executive teams to develop new programs and initiatives, as well as new funding streams to support that programmatic work.
    • Assist in the preparation, submission, and tracking of grant proposals and reports. This includes researching potential funding opportunities, drafting narratives, and coordinating with program staff to gather necessary information.
    • In collaboration with the ED, grow and diversify fundraising programs and revenue sources.
    • Identify new opportunities for strategic partnerships.
    • In collaboration with the ED, develop sustainability plans for the organization and its programs.
  • Systems Improvements
    • Provide support to policy, organizing, communications, and Network Directors.
    • Support intradepartmental team culture by fostering collaboration and learning, including setting goals and coordinating activities and logistics for meetings and retreats.
    • In collaboration with the COO and CCO identify opportunities to address inefficiencies and implement systems improvements to support the functioning of the organization and program teams.
    • Improve internal communications systems, structures, and policies to eliminate silos and clarify roles and responsibilities.
    • In collaboration with the leadership team, organize management meetings, including meetings with the executive leadership, supervisors, and management.
