This role focuses on maintaining and repairing passenger rail cars and locomotives under the supervision of a Passenger Rail Mechanic.
Base pay range$23.00/hr - $25.00/hr

A Mechanical Apprentice, known at Drummac as Qualified Person, must be able to work in compliance while maintaining and repairing passenger rail cars and locomotives while working under the supervision of our Passenger Rail Mechanic. They must adhere to and maintain strict compliance with corporate/office policies and procedures, established health and safety protocols, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Job Responsibilities- Perform air brake inspection of passenger cars and private cars, and have knowledge of air brake systems.
- Perform locomotive daily inspection and troubleshoot and repair/replacement of parts.
- Troubleshoot passenger cars including toilet systems, air conditioning systems, doors, panels, lights, electrical systems, and brake systems and make necessary repairs.
- Fill out regulatory, client, and company‑required paperwork.
- Perform necessary electrical tests and disassemble, replace, repair, modify, rebuild, assemble, adjust, and maintain batteries and all electrical equipment or components on locomotives.
- Communicate written and/or verbal findings of inspections to Supervisor.
- Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on‑call as required.
- Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate dynamic train schedules.
- Work outdoors in inclement weather as required.
- Wear and use required protective equipment while working.
- Take responsibility for own safety while on the job.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Trade school or formal railroad locomotive or diesel mechanical maintenance training preferred.
- Knowledge of locomotive mechanical, locomotive electrical, or industrial heavy equipment mechanical experience preferred.
- Successful completion of a pre‑employment screening process (background check and drug screen).
Hourly rate range for Passenger Rail Mechanic Apprentice candidates in Sacramento, California: $23–$25.

- Newly hired employees will accrue PTO at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
