Job Description and Duties

This position is located at the DMV Headquarters in Sacramento. Under the supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, the incumbent performs legal work in multiple areas of the law, including but not limited to:

  • Perform legal research and write legal memorandums
  • Provide oral or written advice to departmental management and staff
  • Respond to legal correspondence
  • Analyze legislative proposals impacting the department and its programs
  • Draft and adopt regulations with departmental management and staff
  • Analyze and respond to requests under the California Public Records Act
  • Review contracts and leases; review and respond to civil and criminal subpoenas
  • Review departmental documents for legal sufficiency
  • Represent the department in lawsuits handled by the Attorney General, serving as a liaison and assisting in pleadings, discovery, witness coordination, information gathering, and appearances at mediations, arbitrations, settlements and court appearances
  • Represent the department in administrative cases before the Office of Administrative Hearings and State Personnel Board, or in bond interpleader or collection cases

Working Conditions

Part-time telework available. Telework requires California residency. Hybrid telework opportunities are available but may change based on state and departmental needs. Employees may be required to report to the office as necessary. Works in an office setting with artificial lighting and temperature control. Primarily sedentary for extended periods; uses a computer and standard office equipment; participates in meetings.
