Job Description And Duties

The California Energy Commission (CEC) seeks an Attorney IV in the Chief Counsel’s Office – Advocacy and Compliance Unit. The Chief Counsel’s Office is a full-service legal team that advances the mission of the CEC by providing pragmatic solutions-oriented legal services and counsel to support sound decision-making throughout the organization. The Chief Counsel’s Office is involved in all phases of CEC activity, and attorneys have an opportunity to work directly and closely with the state’s principal energy policymakers.

This position is in the Advocacy and Compliance Unit. Attorneys in the Advocacy and Compliance Unit provide legal support to staff and the Lead Commissioner on permitting proceedings for clean energy project applications under the Opt-in Certification Program, including during the environmental review. (The CEC is the lead CEQA agency for environmental review and permitting for any clean energy facility that elects to opt into the Commission’s jurisdiction under the Opt-In Certification Program.)

They also advise and represent CEC staff in power plant license and amendment proceedings, and provide counsel for ongoing investigations, compliance, and enforcement matters. Attorneys also provide legal advice to the CEC and its staff on Public Records Act and confidentiality, and other data collection matters.

Working Conditions

The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with office-based and remote-centered workers. Limited in-person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. This position is remote-centered, which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time from an alternate work location. Teleworking is only available for employees who reside in California.
