Assistant Health Physicist; PRRT - Policy, Procedures, Regulations and Training

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a PRRT (Policy, Procedures, Regulations and Training) Health Physicist (Assistant Health Physicist) within the Radiologic Health Branch (RHB).

The Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) is within the Division of Radiation Safety & Environmental Management of CDPH. RHB enforces laws and regulations designed to protect the public, radiation workers, and the environment. RHB is responsible for providing public health functions associated with administering a radiation control program.

This position supports CDPH’s mission and strategic plan by performing entry‑level duties in Radioactive Materials Licensing (RML) Section for licensing the safe use of radioactive materials.

The Assistant Health Physicist assists higher level health physicists in developing and applying policies, procedures, regulations, and information technology integration, coordinating and facilitating technical and non‑technical training.

The Asst. HP is responsible for applying principles of radiation and health physics, radiation control regulations, and policies and procedures to review and perform the average difficulty and complexity for radioactive materials license applications for various radioactive materials licenses and Sealed Source and Device Registries in accordance with Title 10 CFR and Title 17 CCR.

Assists journey‑level Health Physicists with on‑site facility inspections and attends in‑state and out‑of‑state training.

This position may be eligible for telework. Telework is at the discretion of CDPH and is subject to change. All employees who telework are required to be California residents. Candidates who reside outside of the state may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have primary residency in California prior to appointment.

Travel may be required. Reimbursement for travel is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office are the responsibility of the selected candidate.

• Coordinating and participating in projects and initiatives relating to average complexity and politically sensitive information related to the acquisition, possession, use, decommissioning, and disposal of radioactive materials ensuring compliance with California laws, federal guidelines, and CDPH practices.
• Maintaining technical training records for RML Section staff and coordinating training opportunities to address RML Section requirements.
• Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating improvements to RML Section administrative processes and practices, including correspondence and documentation custody and control, and technological integration.
