Job Summary
This position provides medical nutrition therapy to patients and their families, along with consultation to the interdisciplinary care team on service. Provision of medical nutrition therapy is according to standards of practice, policies and procedures. It includes, but is not limited to, nutritional assessment, diet calculation, coordination of nutritional services with the patient care team, patient food services, and community agencies, participation in case conferences, and continuity of care.
This position participates in multidisciplinary team and department committees and projects and may participate in promotional or community activities for the medical center. This position contributes to the dietetic internship: may precept dietetic interns, teach assigned classes, and may participate in curriculum development for an assigned area.
Primary responsibilities include application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including completion of the nutrition assessment, determination of the nutrition diagnosis, development and implementation of nutrition intervention(s), and monitoring and evaluation of the patient s progress.
The Clinical Dietitian uses the Scope of Dietetics Practice Framework (SODPF) to determine scope of practice, established Standards of Practice and Professional Performance (SOP/SOPP) in nutrition care and practice-specific dietetics, and as available, evidence-based practice protocols/nutrition practice guidelines to help determine nutrition intervention(s).
Key Qualifications- DIETITIAN 2:
Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) registered with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Commission on Dietetic Registration - American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR required based on area assignment within 3 months of hire or upon an assignment change requiring BLS
- Didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice experience approved or accredited by ACEND and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
- Strong academic background and applied background in clinical nutrition
- Knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy principles, including enteral and parenteral nutrition support
- Experience using computers for daily tasks and communications (word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets)
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to be understood in English
- Ability to work effectively using electronic medical records for nutrition assessments
- Understanding of Nutrition Care Process and ADIME charting techniques
- Current knowledge of specialty area; specialty certification preferred (e.g., CNSC, CSO, CDCES, CSR, CSG, CSP, CSPCC, CSOWM, CSSD, RDN-AP/RD-AP, etc.)
- For Pediatric positions: CCS Dietitian Paneling designation or eligible to obtain within one year (strongly preferred)
- Two (2) or more years of relevant work experience
- Experience with large teaching hospital/academic medical center; experience teaching and supervising dietetic interns or students

Additional requirements to the above include advanced degree or certification, SR portfolio, and five (5) or more years of relevant work experience
- Specialty certification in area of practice (preferred)
- Pediatric CCS designation or eligibility (preferred)
- Two or more years relevant work experience; experience in large teaching hospital/academic medical center
- Experience using electronic medical record; experience teaching and supervising dietetic interns or students
- 45% - Coordinate the provision of medical nutrition therapy
- 20% - Provide nutritional counseling and education to patients and their caregivers
- 15% - Participate in administrative functions
- 15% - Provide & precept educational experience to interns and other professional staff
- 5% - Promote nutrition within the medical center and throughout the community
Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) provides for all Food Services and Clinical Nutrition needs for the UC Davis Health Sacramento campus and network of primary and specialty care practices in the greater Sacramento region. We inspire health and healing in our community through sustainable and nourishing food and the provision of evidence-based medical nutrition therapy. FNS provides food services to patients, staff and visitors at UC Davis Health and clinical nutrition services for patients.
