Position: Hospital Assistant 2 - Optometry Clinic

Overview

This position provides patient work-up for comprehensive Ophthalmology and Optometry including all sub-specialty / contact lens services.

This position requires the ability to work in multiple locations in the Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom and Davis areas based on clinic need. Some Saturday shifts (08:00 am – 04:30 pm) and a scheduled weekly late night may be required. Alternating weekends work is required and schedules adjust based on clinical needs and operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • 95% - PATIENT WORK-UP AND VISUAL ASSESSMENT
  • 5% - PRE-OPERATIVE PROCEDURES
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/training.
  • Completion of the Ophthalmic Medical Assisting course, an independent study course offered by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, within three (3) months of hire.
  • Experience in a similar role/function required.
  • Medical and Ophthalmic History Taking: ability to interview the patient courteously, document medications and allergies, and use pain scales; legible, grammatically correct writing; knowledge of ophthalmic terms and diagnosis.
  • Visual Acuity assessment using Snellen chart, near cards, Fix and Follow, Hand movements and light perception.
  • Visual Fields knowledge and artifact avoidance during recording.
  • Stereopsis knowledge and ability to perform Titmus stereopsis test and record findings.
  • Color Vision Test knowledge and accurate recording.
  • Intraocular Pressure Measurement: understanding tonometry, anterior chamber anatomy, and risk of optic nerve damage from pressure changes.
  • Alignment and Motility Examination: knowledge of normal eye movement and strabismus concepts; ability to assess binocular vision in children.
  • Pupillary Examination: knowledge of normal pupillary reactions.
  • Lensometry: ability to read powers with A/O or Marco lensometers.
  • Administration of Topical Ophthalmic Drugs: knowledge of ocular pharmacology and potential side effects.
  • Contact Lens Training: ability to train soft and rigid gas permeable lenses; instruct patients on insertion, removal, and care.
  • Pre-Operative Instructions: organizational skills to process pre-operative paperwork and clearly convey the process to patients.
  • Corneal Topography: ability to capture topography accurately.
  • OCT / OPTOS OCT: knowledge to capture good scans with acceptable signal strengths.
  • Tear Care / Dry Eye Treatment: understanding of treatment and ability to assist with in-office setup and device operation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Completion of the Ophthalmic Medical Assisting course within 3 months of hire.
