This position will report directly to the Director of Health Physics/Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). The Associate Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO)/Sr. Health Physicist/Deputy Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is an advanced level position. The purpose of this position is to help maintain the operational health physics program, ensure compliance items are met, and help to maintain all exposure to radiation ALARA. The person in this role is responsible for interpreting regulations (broad scope license and CCR Title 17 and 10 CFR
20 requirements, JCAHO requirements) and determine their applicability to the Health System and design new programs and procedures to implement requirements. This person is expected to effectively apply this knowledge to make improvements or solve problems. The person in this role is responsible for the strategic deployment of direct reports to fulfill responsibilities related to Health Physics projects, which are generally long term and involve a combination of analytical, technical writing, and communication skills.

This individual must possess skills to perform technical analyses and calculations.

This position also serves as the Deputy LSO for UCDH, providing backup coverage in the case the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is not available or not in the office. This includes supporting programs utilizing clinical and research lasers.

In addition to providing technical leadership, this role will assist in the mentorship of junior health physics staff and personnel. This individual will provide guidance and support in the growth of the supervised staff.

The person in this role will be a part of the Health Physics Office leadership team and provides strategic and operational advice to the Director of Health Physics to advance the mission of the department. It will be expected that this person can provide support during state and/or federal inspections and audits.

• Valid CA Driver's License or must obtain a California driver's license within three (3) months of hire.
• Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
• Bachelor's degree, preferably in health physics or related field.
• Recent experience working under a broad scope license or specific license pertaining to the use of radioactive materials in a medical setting.
• Ability to qualify for state designation as an Associate Radiation Safety Officer within 1 year of hire.
• Ability to practice appropriate problem-solving techniques at all levels of the job performance and independently address health physics questions.
• Ability to lead and mentor junior health physicist within the confines of the UCDH Health Physics department.
• Ability to oversee a laser safety program and have practical knowledge of where to find regulations to ensure regulatory compliance.

• Master's degree is desirable, preferably in health physics or related field.
• More than 3 years previous experience working under a broadscope license or specific license pertaining to the use of radioactive materials in a medical setting. Specific knowledge of 10 CFR 35 requirements.
• Experience working as a laser safety officer.
• Experience supervising in a Health Physics setting.
• Laser safety experience.
• Previous experience calculating radiation dose as it applies to exposures to patients or human subjects.
• Experience overseeing a personnel dosimetry program and in-depth knowledge of radiation dosimetry theory and practical application including knowledge of regulations to ensure exposure limits are not exceeded.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to maintain an effective and cooperative relationship with staff, students, faculty, co-workers, public and regulatory agencies.
• Knowledge of health physics and health physics applications including the elements of a radiation safety program and ALARA principles.
• Knowledge of federal, state and Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
• Specific knowledge of CCR Title 17 requirements regarding the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines.
• Ability to effectively apply this knowledge to make improvements and solve problems.
• Ability to assess radiological conditions, determine if radiation measures are being implemented in an effective manner, analyze facts and circumstances, recognize the need for action and take steps to resolve problems.
• Knowledge of health physics instrument theory, operation and counting statistics.
• Ability to utilize survey meters and other portable equipment to assess and determine radiological conditions.
• Maintain and calibrate radiation survey meters.
