Job Summary
The Speech Pathologist (Per Diem) provides acute care services to patients of all ages—from pediatric to geriatric—within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Under the direction of the Chief Speech Pathologist, this position evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a wide range of communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. The Speech Pathologist collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and therapists to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care across the continuum of recovery.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct comprehensive evaluations and provide treatment for speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders in acute care settings.
- Perform instrumental swallowing assessments, including FEES and VFSS.
- Develop and implement individualized, evidence-based treatment plans.
- Educate and counsel patients, families, and caregivers to support recovery and independence.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate and optimize patient care.
- Document assessments, treatments, and outcomes according to hospital and departmental standards.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and ongoing professional development.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, reports, and billing records in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards.
- Provide instruction and supervision, where required, for student interns and medical students.
- California Licensed Speech Pathologist.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC‑SLP) from ASHA.
- American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR.
- Master’s degree in Speech Pathology.
- Completed Clinical Fellowship Year.
- Thorough knowledge of assessment instruments, test administration, scoring, and interpretation.
- Ability to extract pertinent information and relate it to patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice and program design for individual patients.
- Proficiency in maintaining patient records and processing billing forms accurately and promptly.
- Effective communication skills with patients, families, and other therapists.
- Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for other therapists’ patients on short notice.
- Knowledge of community resources and referral options.
- 2 years of experience in a hospital or clinical setting.
- Experience working in an acute care setting with complex patient populations.
- Experience performing FEES and VFSS in an acute care environment.
