Application ProcessAll applicants must complete the official City of West Sacramento application form and indicate the position applied for. The application must include a fully explained qualification statement; incomplete applications may be disqualified. Additional proof of qualifications may be requested if the information provided is insufficient.

Written Examination: The written test is the POST Entry Law Enforcement Test Battery. A passing "T" score of 45.0, submitted with the application within twelve months of application, may waive the test. "T" scores must be submitted with the application package; they are not accepted at the testing site.
Oral Panel Interview: Candidates who pass the written exam or submit a passing PELLETB score will be invited to an oral panel interview. The interview results determine placement on the eligibility list.
DefinitionPolice Recruit is a recruiting and training level classification for candidates learning the duties of a Police Officer in the West Sacramento Police Department. The recruit at step "A" participates in basic law‑enforcement training, gains an understanding of police procedures, law‑enforcement techniques, first aid, and acquires the physical and emotional skills needed to complete the police academy. The recruit may perform non‑sworn, non‑hazardous duties in support of police operations.
The recruit at step "B" attends a designated P.O.S.T. approved Police Academy for basic training. The position is at‑will, appointed by the City Manager. Recruits who fail to complete the Basic P.O.S.T. Police Academy will be terminated.
The recruit receives general direction from higher‑level Police Department personnel, both sworn and civilian, and P.O.S.T. Academy staff. No direct supervision of staff is exercised.

Education and ExperienceEducation: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: None required.
Licenses and CertificatesPossession of a valid California driver license at the time of appointment.
AgeApplicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment to a probationary Police Officer position.
Special ConditionsFailure to accept or meet any of these special conditions will be grounds for termination. Successful completion of the Police Academy results in swearing in as a probationary Police Officer with full police authority.
Other special conditions:
Respiratory protective equipment may be required; facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with fitting. Candidates must be free of felony convictions under California Government Code, Section 1029. Citizenship:
Must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

Background investigation includes polygraph, fingerprinting, and drug usage history. Candidates must also pass a medical pre‑placement examination, psychological examination, and pre‑employment drug screening.
Employment AgreementThe successful candidate must agree before employment not to resign and accept employment with another law‑enforcement agency for twenty‑four months from the date of appointment to Police Recruit. Resignation within this period requires reimbursement to the City for training costs.
Driver's LicenseLoss of the license during Police Recruit status is cause of termination. The City will check driver records; invalid licenses or four or more negligible operator points will disqualify an applicant.
