There is an additional 3.35% Management Differential which is added to the posted salary for this class.
Under general direction, the Assistant Chief Probation Officer plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day activities of all divisions within the Probation Department. The Assistant Chief Probation Officer is also responsible for implementing policy as it is determined by the County Probation Officer; and acting for the County Probation Officer during absences.
Knowledge of- Management principles and methods, including goal setting, program measurements, program development and implementation, and employee supervision

- The Welfare and Institution Code, the Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Government Code, Code of Civil Procedures and other laws and regulations relating to probation operations
- The principles and procedures of organizational development, administration, strategic planning
- The principles and procedures of budgetary development and monitoring and reporting
- Principles and procedures of Management Information Systems
- Public relations principles
- Principles of grant funding and management
- Personnel practices, and supervisory techniques
- Public relations techniques
- Labor contract negotiation and employee grievances
- Plan, organize, administer and coordinate the activities of varied probation functions
- Evaluate programs and projects and determine outcome measurements
- Implement and enforce departmental policies and philosophy
- Coordinate the utilization of personnel and other resources within the department
- Prepare and administer budgets and plan for equipment, transportation, space, automation, and personnel
- Interpret the goals, functions and procedures of the Probation Department to the public
- Analyze complex technical and administrative problems, evaluate alternatives and adopt effective courses of action
- Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards
- Manage professional and support staff including selection, discipline, motivation, training, and evaluation of staff
- Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others including judicial officers, staff, and the community
- Exercise sound, independent judgment within general policy guidelines and adopt effective courses of action
- One (1) year of full-time experience in the class of Probation Division Chief in Sacramento County service.
- Two (2) years of full-time experience in the class of Assistant Probation Division Chief in Sacramento County service.
- Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in a management capacity assisting in formulating and implementing policies and procedures, planning, budgeting, organizing, and directing through subordinate supervisors the activities of a major facility or division providing the care, custody, and supervision/surveillance of persons under the jurisdiction of a Probation Department or other law enforcement agency.
Note: If the word “experience” is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part‑time paid experience may be accumulated and pro‑rated to meet the total experience requirements.
Special Requirements- Compliance with Government Code:
Incumbents appointed to this class shall meet the minimum standards set forth in California Government Code, Section 1031. - Other Requirement:
Must be able to represent the Department and the Chief Probation Officer at meetings, public forums, business events during work hours, evenings and weekends. - Background/Criminal History:
Appointees must pass a criminal history and background check, and pursuant to California Government Code, Section 1029, the conviction of a felony is grounds for disqualification from an appointment except if the individual has been granted a full and unconditional pardon for the felony.
The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.
