Position: Deputy Sheriff Recruit
This is a continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on:

The testing process consists of a Training and Experience Evaluation Exam. Applicants' relevant experience, education and training will be evaluated based solely upon responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire and the T-score achieved on the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB). Applicants are encouraged to take the PELLETB and receive the results (T-score) prior to submitting an application.

Under close supervision, the Deputy Sheriff Recruit participates in a basic law enforcement training program including the Sacramento Sheriff's Office State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) approved Basic Academy.

Knowledge of

* Applicable laws, rules and regulations related to law enforcement activities
* * Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to area of assignment
* * Basic arithmetic (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, ratios, and fractions)
* * English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
* * Principles of effective customer service
* * Public and private community resources and programs
* * Techniques for communicating and working with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
* Ability to

* Read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances and general literature pertaining to law enforcement activities

* Learn principles and practices of community based policing
* * Learn radio procedures
* * Analyze and interpret legal codes, police problems and criminal evidence

* Adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action, giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation

* Develop keen powers of observation

* Use interview and interrogation  in order to obtain useful, accurate, and truthful information from victims, witnesses, officers, and other persons
* * Understand and follow written and verbal direction

* Keep accurate records and prepare clear, concise, and understandable reports

* Make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately

* Learn the use and care of small firearms

* Learn principles of human behavior including people under physical, psychological, and social stress
* * Establish and maintain cooperative and
* effective working relationships with co-workers, other agencies, community groups, and the general public
* * Communicate effectively with persons from a variety of socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
* * Deal tactfully and courteously with the public
* * Maintain persistence and self-control
* * State factual information objectively
* * Show compassion and empathy for others
* * Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance

Minimum Qualifications

Either:  Graduation from high school.

Or:
Satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education Development (GED) test.

Important:
Under Gov. Code §1031(e), only U.S. accredited high school diplomas, GED tests, equivalency tests approved by the State Department of Education, or U.S. accredited college degrees are accepted.  Diplomas or degrees from unaccredited or non-U.S. schools will not be accepted.
