The Senior Tax Accountant - Indirect Tax is a Finance-based role responsible for leading and managing the company’s indirect tax compliance function across U.S. and international jurisdictions. This position is within the Finance team and partners closely with the Direct Tax team, Human Resources, and Operations to ensure alignment between indirect and direct tax strategies.
In addition to overseeing Sales and Use Tax, Gross Receipts Tax, Excise Tax, Personal Property Tax, VAT, GST/HST, and other non-income-based taxes, this role is responsible for managing tax registrations, business licenses, and ongoing regulatory compliance across a multi-entity engineering and architecture business. This position serves as a partner to Legal, HR/Payroll, and Operations to ensure regulatory compliance, business licensing accuracy, and consistent indirect tax practices across the organization.
As the function scales, this role is designed to evolve into a Manager position, including oversight of future indirect tax team located outside the United States.
Responsibilities & Qualifications DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Indirect Tax Compliance & Reporting- Own the end-to-end indirect tax compliance process across all U.S. states and applicable international jurisdictions.
- Prepare, review, and ensure timely filing of Sales and Use Tax, VAT, GST/HST, Excise, Gross Receipts, and Personal Property Tax returns.
- Monitor and analyze multi-state nexus thresholds, particularly those driven by project-based revenue activities.
- Compiling and reviewing financial information for taxability of engineering, consulting, and professional service revenue streams and cost of services.
- Maintain exemption certificate compliance and supporting documentation.
- Respond to state notices, audits, and regulatory inquiries.
- Manage all tax registrations, state and local business licenses, and regulatory filings across jurisdictions.
- Ensure all entities remain properly registered and in good standing with state, local, and international authorities.
- Oversee new state registrations triggered by nexus or business expansion.
- Coordinate with Legal and external service providers (CT Corporation) on entity registrations, renewals, and compliance requirements.
- Maintain a centralized tracking system for registrations, renewals, and filing deadlines.
- Proactively monitor compliance requirements to prevent lapses, penalties, or operational disruption.
- Develop, enhance, and standardize indirect tax and registration processes and internal controls.
- Create and maintain supporting documentation, deadlines and procedures.
- Identify opportunities for automation and operational efficiency improvements.
- Strengthen cross‑functional collaboration between Direct Tax team, HR/Payroll, Legal, and Operating Brands.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
- Must possess a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in related roles.
- Must have a strong background in multi-state Sales Tax compliance.
- Experience consolidating rules and regulation for tax liabilities, payments and returns.
- Experience in Sales Tax Returns is required.
- Industry experience preferred (Engineering/Architecture).
- Required strong attention to detail, deadline‑oriented, and excellent communication skills.
- Understanding of GAAP and FAR regulations.
- Deltek Vision or Vantagepoint systems experience preferred.
