Scale Attendant II – Sacramento County

Overview

Under general supervision, the Scale Attendant II leads and oversees the work of Scale Attendants. Key duties include receiving refuse material, assessing and collecting disposal fees, recording solid waste statistics at disposal sites and transfer stations, and ensuring tasks are completed per established policies and procedures. The role requires working in a non‑traditional office environment, rotating between remote scale houses, and engaging extensively with the public.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, direct, and mentor scale attendant staff.
  • Review and evaluate staff work, providing feedback and solutions to problems.
  • Operate automated platform scales and related computer systems accurately and efficiently.
  • Handle monetary transactions, balance cash drawers, and record financial information.
  • Maintain accurate records, files, and solid waste statistical data.
  • Communicate policies and procedures to staff and the public.
  • Provide training on operational systems and safety procedures.
  • Detect and report malfunctions of scales and related equipment.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Respond to customer inquiries, complaints, and concerns in a courteous manner.
Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of

  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations related to disposal operations.
  • Principles of cashiering and basic record‑keeping practices.
  • Office operating procedures and computer applications.
  • Safety policies for disposal sites and transfer stations.

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability to
  • Provide leadership, direction, and training for staff.
  • Interpret and apply applicable laws and regulations.
  • Operate automated scales and computer systems with speed and accuracy.
  • Handle money, make change, and balance a cash drawer.
  • Detect equipment malfunctions and recommend solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Develop effective working relationships with colleagues.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Collect and compile data and information.
  • Operate general office equipment such as computers, scanners, copiers, and faxes.
  • Read, speak, and write English at a satisfactory level.
Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • One year full‑time paid experience at the County of Sacramento as a Scale Attendant I, or
  • Two years full‑time paid or volunteer experience performing monetary transactions or providing customer service to the public.
  • Part‑time work may be substituted on a prorated basis (173.6 hours = 21.7 days = one month).
General Qualifications
  • Criminal history and background checks will be conducted; a felony or misdemeanor that impacts job performance may result in disqualification.
  • Background checks may include reference checks, credit history, SSN verification, license verification, military service, and driving history.
  • Valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher may be required.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand or sit for long periods.
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach.
  • Perform typing and use of computer equipment.
  • Recognize vehicle license plates at a distance.
  • Speak and listen in person, over the phone, and on radio systems.
Working Conditions
  • Work outside in inclement weather.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, gas, noise, and odors.
  • Work various shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays, and on‑call.
Probationary Period

Six (6) months.
