THE POSITION
Engineering Technician III - Manages well monitoring and maintenance at Sutter's Landing Landfill, oversees probe systems, reports to regulators, and maintains flare systems to safely burn methane gas. Part of a 3-person team, responsible for fieldwork, lab sampling, and regulatory compliance. Works with Cal Recycle, Sacramento County, California Water Board, and other agencies.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSAdvanced journey‑level classification. Typically filled by advancement from Technician II. Performs complex technical support with independent judgment and may provide indirect supervision. Distinguished from Senior Technicians by supervisory responsibility and decision‑making level.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Prepare topographical plans, profile maps, and produce illustrations for reports.
- Draft and verify plans, calculations, and estimates for public works improvements.
- Measure boundary locations, easements, and topographic features; maintain records.
- Respond to public inquiries regarding engineering activities.
- Conduct basic design and drafting tasks for infrastructure facilities.
- Calculate construction quantities and cost estimates.
- Create easement and right‑of‑way descriptions.
- Verify utility and easement locations on City engineering plans.
- Research and compile field data for reports and public inquiries.
- Operate drafting machinery and CADD software.
- Assist in writing sub‑programs for purchased software.
- Generate reports using spreadsheets, databases, and word processing.
- Prepare written reports and correspondence.
- Perform engineering calculations for distances, areas, volumes, grades, hydraulic flows, etc.
- Investigate traffic complaints and conduct traffic studies.
- Recommend corrective traffic control measures.
- Maintain engineering records, maps, and logs.
- Permit preparation (driveway, encroachment, excavation, etc.).
- Conduct routine materials testing (soil, water, landfill gas).
- Design simple public works projects and analyze alternative costs.
- Perform technical plan checks for City plans and related proposals.
- Monitor contract specifications and compliance.
- Monitor natural gas and groundwater supplies at the landfill.
- Assist in construction and quality control inspections.
- Other related duties performed as assigned.
- Knowledge of drafting terminology, methods, and computer aids.
- Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, databases, CADD.
- High school algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Design detailing and drafting standards.
- Basic engineering principles and record‑keeping.
- Knowledge of public work construction materials and methods.
- Understanding of civil or electrical engineering practices relevant to Technician III.
- Report preparation, including narrative and statistical formats.
- Prepare hand drawings and interpret maps and sketches.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish cooperative relationships with stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Interpret survey notes and property descriptions.
- Apply sound judgment to scale and layout of drawings.
- Perform engineering calculations accurately.

Combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
- Four years related office para‑professional work and six semester units of college‑level math (including at least three units of trigonometry).

- Three years related drafting or engineering work with a certificate from an accredited technical school or community college, or at least twenty semester units in drafting/engineering courses (including six math units as above).
