Position: TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER (CIVIL)

Overview

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER (CIVIL) role at Caltrans District 3. The position is located in Sacramento, with potential for travel and temporary relocation. This role entails hydraulic studies, reporting, modeling, and related engineering work in support of river, canal, and floodway projects where Caltrans or local agency infrastructures encroach into waterways.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct hydraulic studies and prepare written reports, models, maps, charts and graphs for rivers, canals and floodways.
  • Lead or supervise engineering and technical personnel as experience progresses; may function as lead on project activities.
  • Travel and/or temporary relocation as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are defined in the Class Specification for TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER (CIVIL). Eligibility may be determined by exam scores and other state requirements. For specific education and licensing requirements, see the official job posting.

  • Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) from the California Board for all candidates at that range. For other ranges, a PE license is not required.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. SOQ must be typed, no more than 2 pages, single-spaced, 12-point font. Resumes do not replace the SOQ. Include responses to the questions listed in the posting.
Qualifications and Skills (SOQ prompts)
  • Courses, job experience, and training related to Hydrology and Hydraulics.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team; examples of leadership.
  • Written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, reports, presentations, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Computer skills relevant to the job (e.g., MS Office, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D).
  • Explain why you would be a good fit for Structure Hydraulics & Hydrology.
Salary and Location

$6,488.00 - $12,152.00 per month; multiple salary ranges listed depending on classification and incumbency.

Hybrid.

Work Conditions
  • Position located at 1801 30th Street, Sacramento, CA.
  • Hybrid telework; in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs.
  • Travel to meet operational needs; long-term assignments across the state may occur as part of rotations or loans.
  • Rotation Program: 24 to 33 months mandatory rotation through project delivery units; travel may be required.
