Position: Ecologist / Environmental Scientist

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. We are more than 36,000 people, in over 70 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world’s most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role Description

Arcadis is seeking a junior‑level Ecologist/Environmental Scientist to join our Nevada Enviro Socio Permitting team. The successful candidate will support the development of desktop reviews and may lead field data collection for wetland/waterbody delineations, endangered species habitat assessments, and environmental assessments and/or preparation of reports to document field data collection. The successful candidate will also provide environmental inspection and compliance support for construction projects within the region.

This role will primarily support Arcadis’ planning and permitting team working with linear infrastructure and renewable energy clients in Nevada. The position will require a candidate to work both collaboratively with a team of resource specialists and have the capacity to balance varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Arcadis offers a flexible working environment and follows a hybrid work structure.

A successful candidate can expect to work remotely and from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks and teams.

Role Accountabilities
  • Under supervision of senior staff, support a regionally‑focused multi‑disciplinary team of scientists (i.e., biologists, cultural resources specialists, etc.) to provide compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations.
  • Oversee installation, maintenance, and removal of environmental mitigation measures including erosion and sediment controls, spill prevention and containment measures, etc.
  • Manage desktop environmental assessments using current assessment technologies and methods to identify potential permitting requirements and support development of permitting strategy to provide guidance to internal teams and clients.
  • Regularly demonstrate strong technical writing and communication skills to support client needs. This will include the development of technical reports, work plans, memoranda, and other environmental documents to support permitting. It will also include strong verbal communication skills and the ability to provide clear, concise direction to third‑party contractors.

This role will primarily be both office and field based; field assessments related to ecological aspects of projects are required. A working knowledge of GPS systems and the ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, as well as carry supplies weighing up to 30 pounds, are needed. This role will require flexibility for both office and field‑based work with field work up to 50% of the time.

Field work is typically local projects with the potential for multiple‑week assignments within Northern Nevada.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental, or land use planning or other natural resource related field.
  • Two years of experience in the environmental field.
  • Relevant regional experience in the western United States.
  • Experience with evaluating project compliance with state and federal laws and environmental and regulatory processes—federal, state, and local regulators such as PUC, PSC, FERC, BLM, USFS, USFWS, USACE, as well as experience with CEQA and NEPA.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive reports/permit applications and particularly experience with linear projects (e.g., utility projects, pipeline projects, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in managing environmental inspection projects for linear utility projects including overseeing contractor implementation of environmental conditions and mitigation measures as set forth in permits, plans and procedures.
  • State‑issued Erosion and Sediment Control certification if applicable.
