For nearly four decades, B Street Theatre has been a cornerstone of Sacramento’s cultural landscape—dedicated to producing new works, supporting artists, and inspiring audiences of all ages. Through our Education Program, we serve more than 50,000 students annually, offering access to live theatre experiences and arts education that foster creativity, empathy, and imagination. Our teaching artists play a vital role in this mission, helping young people discover the transformative power of storytelling and self-expression.
Position OverviewA Teaching Artist at B Street Theatre blends artistic professionalism with educational practice, leading workshops, classes, and programs in a specific art form for diverse audiences - typically in schools, community centers, or at the Sofia. Teaching Artists develop lesson plans, deliver engaging instruction, and foster a positive learning environment that encourages creative expression, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the arts.
Responsibilities- Curriculum Development:
Design and implement arts-based educational programs and workshops that foster both creative skills and academic growth. - Instruction and Demonstration:
Lead hands-on classes and activities in a chosen art form (e.g., theatre, play writing, movement, or visual storytelling), demonstrating techniques, concepts, and artistic processes. - Classroom Management:
Create an inclusive, engaging, and safe learning environment that promotes participation and collaboration among students. - Adaptability:
Modify lessons and approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners across various age groups, skill levels, and learning styles. - Collaboration:
Work closely with educators, administrators, and B Street program staff to align arts programming with educational and organizational goals. - Mentorship and Support:
Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging creative confidence and personal growth among participants.
- Artistic Expertise:
Professional experience in an art form such as theatre, performing arts, visual arts, or literary arts. - Educational Practice:
Knowledge of curriculum development and effective, student-centered teaching methods. - Interpersonal
Skills:
Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills with learners of all backgrounds. - Creativity and Flexibility:
Ability to adapt to dynamic classroom environments and respond to student needs with creativity and patience. - Commitment to Inclusion:
Dedication to fostering a welcoming environment that reflects the diversity of our community and values equity, empathy, and respect.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Theatre, Education, Fine Arts, or a related field.
- Experience teaching in K–12 settings or working with youth in community arts programs.
- Familiarity with California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) standards or similar arts education frameworks.
- Experience designing and implementing arts-integrated curriculum or residency-based programs.
- Bilingual or multilingual ability (especially Spanish) is a plus.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Prior experience collaborating with a professional theatre company or arts organization.
- Fingerprint clearance is required
- Certificate of completion of California Mandated Reporter training
- Current CPR and First Aid certification may be required
- Current TB test results may be required

- Hospitals, senior centers, and other community venues
- $70 per single class session
- $19 per hour for meetings and administrative responsibilities
