The English Department at American River College has committed itself to an intersectional, social justice approach where we recognize how race, gender, sexuality, and class are interconnected and we work to empower students to position themselves as readers, writers, and critical thinkers. English at ARC is made up of five distinct but overlapping programs, which provide access to in-person, online, and hybrid instruction in creative writing, literature, education, reading, and writing courses.

The primary purpose of these courses is not only to build knowledge and deepen perspectives but also to cultivate the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that students will use to transform their lives and the lives of others. Over the last several years, all the programs in English have done extensive work to become race-conscious and develop culturally responsive and culturally relevant practices and pedagogies.

We have participated in and developed equity research and training focused on assessments, course material, and positive faculty, staff, and student dynamics. Since equity is a process not a product, we continue to create and revise courses and programs where students can see themselves, understand the lives of others, and develop the skills to reach their personal, academic, and career goals.

We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the above mission and purpose and are passionate about teaching writing courses that develop students  skills and perspectives in line with this mission and purpose.
