Overview
Samuel Merritt University invites applications for the [Q1 2026 Start] Annual Faculty - Medical / Surgical Nursing (Sacramento) role in the College of Nursing (CoN). The position combines teaching and service to prepare graduates to provide nursing care in a dynamic healthcare environment and to advance nursing practice and health outcomes for diverse populations.
Duties And ResponsibilitiesMajor Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
- Teaching (92%)
- Creates a dynamic, learner-centered environment that uses diverse teaching methods based on educational theory and evidence-based practice.
- Models reflective and critical thinking and serves as a coach and mentor; assists students in developing learning plans to achieve course objectives.
- Maintains and enhances competence in taught subjects; ensures course integrity across programs and curricula.
- Prepares and reviews examinations, papers, and student projects; monitors at-risk students and clinical site issues.
- Supervises or teaches clinical rotations in acute, community, and laboratory settings and internship/preceptorships as needed.
- Documents student progress; teaching assignments may occur at any SMU campus.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Participates in Faculty Organization, College of Nursing Faculty meetings, and University or College committees as needed.
- Provides service to the profession and community; supports student success by clarifying curriculum requirements and facilitating access to educational resources.
- Engages in university events and promotes learning environment improvements as appropriate.
- Earned Master’s degree required;
Doctorate in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution preferred. - Current California Public Health Certificate or eligible for certification in California.
- Three years of work experience as a public health or community health nurse in California.
- Teaching experience with diverse student populations at the baccalaureate or higher level preferred.
- Unencumbered California registered nurse license or eligible for licensure in California.
- Rank commensurate with qualifications and experience; experience with leadership in healthcare academic institutions and community organizations preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication; ability to read and write clear documents.
- Function effectively as a team member and independently.
- Express ideas verbally and in writing; receive detailed information through communication.
- Strong commitment to caring science principles and mindfulness-based stress reduction practices.
- Model ethical and professional behaviors and effective communication; align with the mission, vision, and values of the program, school, and university.
- Maintain safety and quality of student learning activities.
1722 instructional and 150 service hours comprise a regular, 12-month annual faculty appointment (total 1872 hours).

Pay RangeAnnual salary range: $81,000 ~ $108,000 (exempt). Salary determined based on qualifications, experience, and location.
