Posted Range: $75,504/annually - $126,126/annually. This base salary range represents a good faith range for this position. The role is eligible for annual incentive pay and may offer continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Responsibilities include supervising and/or managing capital construction project activity, inspection teams, and contract construction to safely deliver water and wastewater investment projects in accordance with technical standards, company policies and regulatory requirements. Projects may include budgeting and administration within an established capital investment management process, management or self-performance of project delivery tasks (safety reporting, permitting, procurement, construction management, field inspection, testing, commissioning, and closeout).

Support project delivery by interpreting asset and operational requirements, organizing and executing detailed engineering design tasks, administering permitting tasks, providing technical support and operator training during construction and commissioning. Troubleshoot water/wastewater operations and maintenance concerns and provide program management for maintenance of engineered assets or event management support for unplanned occurrences.

Key Accountabilities
  • Manage multiple projects and varied engineering assignments related to capital investment construction.
  • Efficient management of contractors including negotiation of contract agreements; delivery of projects on time, within budget, and with safety reporting.
  • Support diverse workforce development and procurement activities to promote diversity in contracted construction services.
  • Supervise field and contract personnel to ensure safe and timely completion within budget and standards.
  • Assist in preparing technical, bidding, and contractual documents for capital investment projects.
  • Establish project budgets and monitor/manage budgets and schedules for medium to small capital investment projects.
  • Provide field construction expertise on engineering and operational issues; support business development through analysis of water and wastewater opportunities.
  • Adhere to engineering standards, specifications, and equipment manufacturer recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively, provide leadership, and foster an open, adaptable work environment.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Strong construction management and procurement skills; strong field construction experience.
  • Ability to manage and influence subcontractors and consultants; assess risks and rewards of capital projects.
  • Ability to work on multiple contracts simultaneously; strong teamwork and networking.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; motivated, flexible, and proactive.
  • Knowledge of US environmental regulations, legislation, technology trends impacting the water industry.
  • Ability to work on multiple fast-paced projects with minimal direction; effective planning and organization.
  • Understanding of construction procurement processes, construction management principles, scheduling, sequencing, and execution; knowledge of water and wastewater standards, materials, equipment, safety regulations.
Experience/Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering, Construction Management, or related field (commensurate experience considered).
  • Five+ years of experience managing and implementing capital improvement programs and construction projects.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or Construction Management certifications preferred.
Work Environment
  • 70% field / 30% office.
Travel Requirements
  • Field travel with minimal travel beyond the state service area.
