Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) seeks a dynamic Research Data Specialist I who manages and presents scientific data and modeling information. The position reports to the Insurance Model Advisor and serves as a Climate and Catastrophe Risk Mitigation Specialist. Key responsibilities include supporting and developing data processes, preparing complex statistical analyses, and recommending policies to reduce climate risks related to wildfire, extreme heat, and flooding events.

The role is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code and requires completion of a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700). Employees must comply with the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025 information.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Proven commitment to working in teams with diverse backgrounds, cultures and personal experiences.
  • Experience managing and presenting scientific data and modeling information.
  • Experience creating communications documents, such as fact sheets, presentations, and visualizations for public audiences.
  • Experience producing written memoranda, visual analyses, technical and public reports, and analytical or policy summaries.
  • Strong organizational skills for collaborative projects.
  • Understanding of climate change risks to insurance, climate resilience, land‑use, datasets and statistical models, and risk mitigation approaches.
