Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: Fishbourne

Chichester Harbour Conservancy is looking for enthusiastic, practical and motivated individuals to join our team of Volunteer Rangers. This rewarding role offers the chance to support our Rangers in caring for one of the South Coast’s most important landscapes, while gaining hands-on conservation experience and meeting like-minded people.

What you’ll be doing

Volunteer Rangers support Rangers with practical countryside management and access work across Chichester Harbour. Activities may include:

  • Scrub clearance, coppicing and hedge laying
  • Tree planting and habitat management
  • Carpentry, fencing and boardwalk construction
  • Footpath surfacing and general site improvements
  • Assisting with volunteer work parties, including welcoming volunteers, setting up tasks and helping pack away tools
  • Supporting health and safety on site
  • Helping to create a friendly, inclusive environment for all volunteers

There may also be opportunities to assist Rangers with full-day or more specialised tasks, depending on your interests and experience.

Commitment

We offer flexibility and will agree a commitment that works for both you and CHC. Minimum commitment: one two-hour volunteer work party per term (or equivalent across the year) Additional ad-hoc opportunities are optional

Who we’re looking for

You don’t need formal qualifications – enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in are key. We’re particularly interested in people who:

  • Enjoy working outdoors as part of a team
  • Are passionate about wildlife conservation and improving public access
  • Can listen, follow instructions and work safely
  • Are reliable, self-motivated and able to maintain enthusiasm during physically demanding tasks in all weathers

Locations

Volunteer Rangers may work at various sites around Chichester Harbour, including Thorney Island, Earnley Triangle (Hayling Island), Fishbourne and Dell Quay. A driving licence is not required, but a willingness to travel is important. Many sites are accessible by bus or cycle, and we will work with volunteers who do not have access to a vehicle.

What you’ll gain

  • Practical conservation and countryside management experience
  • Training and support from experienced Rangers
  • The opportunity to contribute directly to protecting a nationally important landscape
  • A chance to meet new people and develop new skills

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by 9am on Monday 9th February 2026. The next stage will involve an informal discussion, a practical assessment and an opportunity to meet the team on 24 February 2026.
