About
The Role
The Access Clinician plays a key role in ensuring timely, compassionate, and clinically sound access to behavioral health services. This position conducts comprehensive diagnostic intakes for children, adults, individuals with substance use disorders (SUD), and individuals with developmental disabilities (DDS). The clinician gathers relevant clinical information, assesses eligibility for services, and connects clients to appropriate treatment and support options within the agency or through external referrals.
The role is central to promoting person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally competent care.
Principal Responsibilities
- Conduct biopsychosocial assessments for individuals across the lifespan, including children, adults, and older adults.
- Provide diagnostic evaluations using clinical criteria and determine appropriate level of care.
- Identify and assess needs related to mental health, substance use, co-occurring disorders, and developmental/intellectual disabilities.
- Coordinate care with internal teams (e.g., outpatient therapy, psychiatry, case management, residential services) and external providers.
- Facilitate immediate safety planning and crisis intervention as needed.
- Complete intake documentation, screeners, and billing requirements in a timely and accurate manner using the electronic health record (EHR).
- Work collaboratively with clients and families to ensure informed choice and access to culturally appropriate services.
- Maintain awareness of community resources and referral options, including for specialized populations (e.g., youth services, MAT programs, DDS resources).
- Participate in access team meetings, clinical case reviews, and staff trainings.
- Assist with coverage of same-day access/walk-in hours, intakes in the community, warm hand-offs, and follow-up care coordination.
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or a related field required.
- Active licensure in the state (e.g., LCSW, LMSW, LPC, LPCA, LMFT, or equivalent) required or license-eligible within 6 months.
- At least 2 years of experience conducting clinical assessments with diverse populations.
- Experience with substance use assessments and knowledge of ASAM criteria strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with intellectual and developmental disabilities and related services preferred.
- Previous work in a community mental health setting is highly desirable.
- Strong diagnostic and clinical formulation skills.
- Comfort working with individuals in crisis and high-need populations.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and cultural competence.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency with electronic health records and documentation standards.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with personal automobile liability insurance coverage at or above the levels mandated by the State of Vermont.

- Competitive Pay - $60,000-$66,000 per year
