Phlebotomist

A phlebotomist plays a key part in the smooth running of patient care. Their primary role is to collect blood samples safely, accurately, and with as much comfort as possible for the patient. This includes identifying the correct tests, preparing the equipment, confirming patient details, and ensuring samples are labelled and handled properly so they reach the laboratory in good condition.

They also help manage the flow of patients by organising appointments, maintaining infection control standards, and reassuring individuals who may be anxious about having blood taken. In many practices, phlebotomists support the clinical team by spotting issues that may need clinical attention, such as difficulties finding a vein or unexpected symptoms during a procedure.

Rushden Medical Centre, County Surgery and Brook Medical Centre

Rushden Medical Centre is a GP practice serving the community in and around Rushden. With a strong and diverse clinical team, the practice provides comprehensive, patient-focused primary care designed to meet the needs of a growing population.

We offer an extensive range of general medical services, including routine and urgent appointments, chronic disease management, health screening, and enhanced services delivered by our multidisciplinary workforce. Our size allows us to combine the accessibility of traditional general practice with the resilience and breadth of expertise found in larger clinical teams.

The core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist are as follows. On occasion, there may bea requirement to carry out tasks not listed below, that are within the reasonable scope of the role.

• Obtainpatients consent for the collection of a blood sample
• Performingvenepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
• Correctlabelling, packaging and storing of samples
• Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
• Ensuringsamples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
• Maintaining an effective liaison with laboratory staff
• Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

In addition to thecore responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to;

• Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
• Qualification in Venepuncture
• Training in Infection Prevention and Control

• Experience in a GP practice
• Experience with System One
• Ability to record clinical notes
• Clear, polite telephone manner
• Competent in the use of Office and Outlook
• Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure
• Effective time management
