Essential Job Functions- Under the supervision of the Court Administrator, primarily responsible for the provision of active physical security for the Municipal Court when in session. May provide additional physical security to the Municipal Court Staff as needed. Maintains order and decorum of the Municipal Court. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Maintains order during court sessions and remain alert to possible disturbances; provide security for the Judge in attendance; obtain materials needed by the Judge during proceedings; announce Judge and call court to order; maintain custody of offenders awaiting trial or transport back to the jail; remand persons to custody during court proceedings.
- Provides for the safety and security of the Municipal Court, its employees, customers and the public. Performs a variety of peace officer duties including responding to requests from other law enforcement agencies for back-up and emergency assistance.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
High School Diploma or GED, associate degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university preferred. Preference may be given to those separated or retired from full-time Peace Officer duties in good standing.
Knowledge of judicial process; municipal court procedures; knowledge of state, local, and federal laws relating to law enforcement; knowledge of City Ordinances and City Marshal's Office policies and procedures. Must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to analyze and solve problems; ability to deal tactfully with co-workers; interact effectively with a variety of individuals under potentially hostile and stressful situations, including arrestees, inmates, law enforcement officers and agencies, and the general public;
skill in the use and care of firearms, and the dynamics of arrest and seizure.
Ability to utilize physical security equipment, including pass through and wand type metal detectors. Ability to utilize various and appropriate levels of force, including verbal skills, defensive tactics, pepper spray and firearms. Experience in street level law enforcement is desirable. Possesses safety skills inherent to police work.
Other RequirementsMust complete TCOLE Court Security Course within one year of employment. Certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Texas, annual continuing education necessary to retain TCOLE certification.
Must pass a background review and investigation. Valid driver's license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to read and write the English language.
Works in a climate-controlled office environment. Includes sitting, walking, reaching, bending, climbing etc.; occasionally lifts objects weighing 40 lbs.
Part-time employees working a schedule of less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for City benefits or participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS). Employees in these positions participate in a Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan as an alternative to Social Security.
