Under the direction of the Head of Service, Healthcare Support Workers will assist in delivering high-quality,person-centred care and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses,ensuring their comfort, dignity, and well-being.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an open day being held on 20th February 2026.
Main duties of the job- Provide compassionate and empathetic care and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families, respecting their dignity, choices, and cultural preferences.
- Assist patients with personal care tasks, including bathing, toileting, dressing, and feeding, ensuring their physical comfort and well-being.
- Support patients with mobility, transfers, and positioning, using safe manual handling techniques and equipment as required.
- Facilitate late discharge and support overnight admissions into hospice care.
- Monitor patients' vital signs, symptoms, and general condition, reporting any changes or concerns to the Head of Hospice at Home.
- Document patient observations, care interventions, and other relevant information accurately and timely in accordance with hospice policies and procedures.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including meal preparation, serving, and feeding, ensuring their nutritional needs are met and dietary preferences are respected.
- Support patients in engaging in recreational activities, hobbies, and social interactions to promote their well-being and quality of life.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients, ensuring their rooms and communal areas are tidy, well-stocked, and free from hazards.
Rotherham Hospice is a charity dedicated to the people of Rotherham, offering specialist palliative and end of life care to our community since 1996.
We provide comprehensive, compassionate care through two primary patient services:
- 24-hour Hospice at Home Service
Additionally, we offer wider support to patients and their families through:
- Complementary therapies & hairdressing
- Counselling and Bereavement Support for adults, children and teenagers
- Day services with individual and group sessions
- Family memory events
- Occupation therapy and physiotherapy
- Tailored experiences for patients and loved ones

- Provide emotional support and companionship to patients and their families, actively listening to their concerns and offering reassurance and empathy.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members, including nurses, doctors, social workers, and therapists, to ensure coordinated and holistic care for patients and families.
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and care planning sessions, contributing insights and observations to inform patient care plans and goals.
- Provide supervision and guidance for volunteers, working with the Volunteer Manager when necessary to maximise volunteer impact.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trusting relationships with patients and families.
- Excellent organisational and multitasking abilities, with attention to detail and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
- Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care, with a genuine commitment to supporting individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses.
- Proficient in Microsoft systems.
- Multilingual proficiency. Ability to fluently communicate in multiple languages.
- Previous experience working in a healthcare or social care setting.
- Knowledge of and adherence to relevant policies, procedures, and regulations governing healthcare delivery and patient safety.
- Basic clinical knowledge within a relevant setting.
