Job Description

The role of a Disclosure Officer is critical to the ability of the Environment Agency to conduct robust investigations into criminal activity associated with environmental offending. As part of the Yorkshire Area Enforcement Team, you will perform a key role on serious and significant environmental crime cases in compliance with the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 and related legislation and guidance.

You will be the principal disclosure officer on specific cases, working closely with investigating officers and our legal services department, building and maintaining strong working relationships across a wide spectrum to provide the best possible service.

Team

You will be part of our Yorkshire Area Enforcement Team, which specialises in tackling serious environmental crime. In addition to our focus on criminal activity within the waste sector, we lead investigations into other environmental offences, collaborating with other Area Teams and the National Environmental Crime Unit, as well as external enforcement partners to ensure a coordinated and robust approach to environmental protection.

Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge and experience of performing the role of Principal Disclosure Officer on investigations and preparing accurate unused schedules.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.
  • Detailed knowledge of Attorney General’s Guidelines 2020 and 2022.
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • High level of computer literacy – particularly Microsoft Excel and maintenance of large databases.
  • Knowledge of criminal investigations and legislation governing investigation such as the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, Regulation of Investigative Powers Act 2000.
  • Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail and the ability to produce detailed and accurate reports to specific time scales.
  • Proven ability to adapt your written and oral communication style to a diverse range of customers and audiences, maintaining relationships over a wide geographical area.
  • Proven record of managing an extensive and complex workload with a minimum of supervision.

It is anticipated that in‑person interviews will take place in mid‑May. We are a dispersed team with offices across Yorkshire. Flexible working arrangements are in place to support your work/life balance. There will be an expectation to attend face‑to‑face meetings, with occasional travel to offices outside your base location.

The post holder should have or be able to achieve SC clearance. You will participate in incident rotas to support our Incident Management function. Further information about the Incident role can be found in the candidate pack.

Provide an example of when you have personally built a working relationship covering a wide geographical area using a range of communication techniques, in particular outlining any challenges you faced.

Competence 3 – Takes Decisions and Solves Problems

Provide an example of a difficult situation when you have taken control as the principal decision maker, identified the pertinent issues and achieved a successful resolution.
