The Position
HBK is looking for an Apprentice Materials Science Technologist for our Advanced Materials Characterisation and Testing Facility in Rotherham. This is an exciting role for someone with a keen interest in materials testing and fatigue behaviour. You’ll learn mechanical testing, maintain equipment, and assist with documentation for internal and commercial work—gaining exposure to the operational aspects of an operational testing facility.

What You’ll Do- Assist with mechanical testing: specimen inspection, test rig setup, test monitoring, and data processing.
- Conduct data analysis and reporting.
- Help with routine operations activities including calibration, risk assessments, maintenance and H&S documentation.
- Learn fixture design and manufacture using CAD and machine shop equipment.
- Participate in customer meetings and present at STEM events held within the company.
- Contribute to continuous improvement activities and R&D projects.
- Five GCSEs, including:
- Maths at grade 6/B or above
- English Language at grade 4/C or above
- Science at grade 4/C or above
- Two additional GCSEs at grade 4/C or above
- 112 UCAS points, including:
- At least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC national qualifications or T levels. This should include mathematics to A level and another STEM subject (ideally from physics, physical science, engineering science, computer science, technology, chemistry or another science or technology subject).
- We may also consider applicants with equivalent qualifications and relevant work experience.
- Enthusiastic about engineering and problem‑solving.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable, organised, and able to work independently.
- Eager to learn and curious to push technological boundaries.
- Fully funded Level 6 Materials Science Technologist degree through Sheffield Hallam University.
