Our 12-month industry placements start in September and offer hands-on experience to build skills that matter. This is an opportunity to learn, grow, and explore career pathways in environment and regulatory work.
OverviewAt the Environment Agency, we regulate process industries across England under Environmental Permitting and COMAH Regulations. You will rotate through three areas:
Permitting, Local Operations, and Environment & Business. You will review permit applications, support regulatory officers, and deliver a technical project to show the impact of our work in balancing environmental protection with economic benefit.
- Work with Regulated Industry teams to support environmental regulation and compliance.
- Contribute to data management and analysis to evaluate environmental impact and opportunities for carbon reduction and industrial transition.
- Develop and apply environmental standards; assist in incident management and enforcement where applicable.
- Engage in partnership working and public engagement to support regulatory outcomes.
- Support documentation and continuous improvement in processes and safety practices.
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in the environment and a passion for creating a better place for people and wildlife. You should be studying (or have studied) a Chemical or Process Engineering degree accredited by IChemE. Skills that will help you succeed include:
- Team working

- Problem-solving
- Engineering knowledge
- Health and safety awareness
Experience can come from volunteering, sports teams, or social clubs in addition to paid work.
Eligibility criteria- Your status as a UK, Commonwealth, or EEA national with the right to work in the UK.
- Enrollment in an undergraduate degree, or integrated master’s program, in the penultimate year, or having graduated within the last year (from June 2025 onwards).
