Position Summary
This is a semi-skilled light automotive and construction equipment operator position. Employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all light road construction equipment utilized by the Road Department.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Operates a variety of equipment including the following: front-end loader, dump truck, water truck, pick-up truck tractor, brush hog, backhoe, power broom, service truck, pneumatic roller, tandem truck, forklift and steel wheel roller.
- Responsibilities include routine servicing and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Responsible for preparing and submitting required reports by supervisory personnel.
- Repair, construct, scrape, clean, and fill a wide range of County-owned hard surface and dirt roads and ditches.
- Removes snow from county-owned roads when warranted by weather conditions.
- Digs, grades, and places culverts and cattle guards at various property entrances, or under County-owned roads.
- Mows weeds and picks up trash when indicated.
- Hauls and removes dirt and gravel from County-owned roads.
- Repair, place and install traffic control devices as directed.
- Use tank truck to wet down dusty or hard road surfaces.
- Patches hard road surfaces.
- Perform temporary assignments beyond general duties to enable employee to gain skill and experience to become eligible for advancement.
- Must know and understand County Personnel Policy and all county departmental policies pertinent to the position.
- Employee must perform all duties with minimal supervision. Employee may be required to work irregular hours, attend job-related meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.
- This position performs under the general supervision of the Road Foreman who may provide assignments and instruction, determines objective, priorities and deadlines, and who assists the employee with unusual situations. The employee uses own initiative and judgment to perform work in an independent and timely manner in accordance with precedents and established policies and procedures.
- Education/Training/
Experience:
High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 years experience operating light duty equipment. - Experience Substitution:
Graduation from a vocational college in equipment operation may be substituted for two years of experience. - Licenses/Certification:
New Mexico Class A CDL with tanker endorsement must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Employee may be eligible for County assistance through the Chaves County CDL Assistance Administrative Policy. Failure to obtain a New Mexico Class A CDL in the time frame established may result in termination. - Desirable
Qualifications:
Verifiable road work experience and CDL driver experience. - Other:
Post offer Drug Analysis Test and/or pre-employment physical. Drivers license, Employment and criminal Background Investigation.
This position requires employee to work Monday through Thursday 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. In some circumstances employee is required to work Wednesday through Saturday 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Position requires employee to work On Call.

- Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to write clear concise reports.
- Able to operate and maintain assigned equipment in a safe and hazard free manner.
- Must be knowledgeable of all traffic laws and regulations.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
- Must be able to maintain an acceptable attendance record, be punctual and meet established deadlines.
- Employee is subject to random drug and alcohol testing per Federal DOT guidelines.
- This position must comply with all safety guidelines of Chaves County.
- Eye goggles, gloves, hearing protection, reflecting vests, steel toe boots, cones and flags are used as safety precautions.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. occasionally (i.e. up to one-third of work day), from ground to waist level. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. frequently to constantly (i.e., from one-third up to entire work day), from ground to shoulder level.
- Ability to sit up to five hours at one time, and to ten hours total per day.
- Ability to stand and/or walk up to five hours at one time, and up to ten hours total per day.
- Ability to climb in and out of equipment cabs at least twenty times daily at estimated height of six to seven feet.
- Ability to crouch, kneel, and remain in a prone position for up to 30 minutes at one time, and up to one-third of work day.
