Job Summary

The Laboratory Technical Supervisor is primarily responsible for the specific section or discipline that he or she is assigned. Their technical expertise will serve as a resource to the technologists/technicians and assistants within the department as well as the Physicians, Nurses and Patients who are our customers. They are the designated Subject Matter Experts in the discipline to which they are assigned.

The Technical Supervisor is responsible for the analyzer operation, assay performance and supervision of staff within the section. They are also responsible for maintaining accreditation readiness within the department. Additional responsibilities include all Human Resource functions including scheduling, payroll, and performance evaluations, etc.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Technical Oversight

    Demonstrates current theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to be applied to area of expertise. Works directly with the Pathologists as principal investigator for area(s) of expertise researching new assays, recalls, errors. Determines rules and algorithms used to maintain acceptable parameters for test verification. Analyzes statistical data such as variance, mean, coefficient of variation, and interprets graphs and charts to insure accuracy of test data.

    Assures readiness for accreditation inspections. Maintains analyzers in peak condition, troubleshoots equipment malfunctions, may stop production until remedial action is successful. May initiate equipment repair and validate functionality. Manages assays, performs or assigns correlations, linearity, calibrations, and parallel studies in accordance with established written standards of accrediting agencies and legal institutions.

  • Supervision

    Supervises Technologists, Technicians, and Support Specialists assigned on their shift or department. Schedules personnel in a fair and equitable manner while minimizing the use of overtime. Performs employee training, coaching, and counseling, performs annual performance evaluations and competency assessments, maintains employee payroll, drives engagement through effective action planning, ensures training and competency documentation.

  • Performance Improvement and Quality Management

    Incorporates the philosophy of quality and performance improvement into daily routines. Actively initiates improvements for key quality criteria such as turnaround time, accuracy, and sensitivity of test methods. Assists other employees in improving skills and knowledge. Educates peers and subordinates on customer service performance improvement initiatives.

  • Customer Service and Team Performance

    Ensures team maintains established turnaround times, maintains a positive impression, greets everyone and treats customers as guests, communicates effectively and proactively manages service recovery situations, serves others from a team‑centered approach.

  • General

    Maintains attendance and punctuality, follows dress code, wears and displays , maintains organized clean work area, performs other duties as assigned, follows employee conduct expectations in the Handbook, complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required

Minimum Education
  • Associates Medical Technology or Associates Other or Bachelors Other-Preferred
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
  • HT(ASCP) – Histotechnician
  • MLS(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist
  • MLS(AMT) – Medical Laboratory Scientist
  • MT(AMT) – Medical Technologist
  • MT(ASCP) – Medical Technologist
  • MT(AAB) – Medical Technologist
Required Minimum Experience

Minimum 5 years of pertinent experience in laboratory medicine. Supervisory experience is preferred.
