Half Summer Hero Counselor – Camp Kingfisher
Join Chattahoochee Nature Center, Inc as a Half Summer Hero Counselor at Camp Kingfisher.
Position OverviewHalf Summer Hero positions are for applicants with Camp Kingfisher experience: a staff member or at least two years as a Leader in Training (LIT). They are intended for individuals who cannot commit to the entire summer but can work at least four weeks. Former LITs must attend at least 75% of staff training. Former staff members’ attendance will be at the discretion of Camp Directors.
As primary caregivers for camper groups, counselors lead activities, coordinate with co-counselors, maintain safety, plan schedules, and communicate with parents.
Responsibilities- Supervise groups of children grades K-7 in an outdoor setting.
- Lead camper activities with excellence and enthusiasm.
- Develop and implement environmental education activities such as hikes, animal demonstrations, and science exploration programs.
- Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff.
- Clean camp facilities as needed.
- Handle captive wildlife daily during camp programs.
- Attend weekly staff meetings and training sessions.
- Assist in program areas such as waterfront, pool, arts and crafts as directed.
- Support Camp Kingfisher aftercare program.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
- Participate in evening programming (older camper groups).
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
- Track and record hours worked, and obtain director’s approval for additional hours.
- Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season.
- Must be able to lift over 20 pounds.
- Valid driver’s license or state‑issued .
- Experience and passion for teaching or working with children.
- Comfortable in outdoor settings.
- Background in environmental education, natural history, teaching, childcare, or camps.
- Willingness to handle captive wildlife with training provided.
- Current tetanus shot or willingness to obtain one.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification (course provided).
