Overview
Responsible for performing professional sanitarian services and inspection work to ensure the protection of consumer health through the effective administration of regulatory food service sanitation programs and the City's general sanitation program.
Responsibilities- Inspects all food and drink service establishments, including bakeries, public eating places, grocery stores, meat markets, food manufacturing and warehouses, processing facilities and other food related establishments.
- Issues notices of violation or citations to enforce compliance with ordinances, laws and regulations.
- Establishes working relationships with local business owners to explain federal, state, and local law regarding various environmental, health, and safety issues.
- Ensures proper issuance of City food inspection permits.
- Prepares documented reports required by federal and state laws and local ordinances.
- Conducts miscellaneous inspections of facilities (e.g., ambulatory homes for the aged and shops) for compliance with pertinent regulations and recommends issuance or denial of permits to operate.
- Performs detailed tasks concerned with rodent, fly, and mosquito control projects.
- Conducts inspections of school buildings and facilities for hazards and any repairs needed.
- Performs certificate of occupancy inspections.
- Performs and provides reviews, recommendations and reports concerning complex permit applications and associated inspections, investigations, data, evaluations, and conduct on environmental health issues.
- Investigates suspected or confirmed reports of foodborne diseases.
- Reviews and approves plans for new or extensively remodeled food establishments.
- Maintains the City's food service sanitation and health protection programs.
- Makes recommendations regarding any needed improvements to the City's food related ordinances.
- Prepares and provides required information, reports and evidence to be used in food related legal actions.
- Provides counsel, education and technical assistance to the public regarding environmental health matters including but limited to food preparation and storage.
- Plans and implements food service programs for the department and to the public.
- Regularly updates and maintain food establishments' health scores on City web page.
- Assists the Building Official in the preparation of the department's annual budget.
- Testifies in court regarding violations as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or a closely related field.
- Two (2) years' experience as a sanitarian, consumer health, microbiology or environmental health field experience.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Registered as a Professional Sanitarian with the Texas Department of Health.
- Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.
- Reliable transportation and liability insurance.
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of pre-employment checks:
Criminal background check;

- 3 weeks of vacation per year after the first year (2 weeks of vacation during the first year).
