OAG - Child Support | Child Support Officer II-IV | 26-0181

Join the Office of the Attorney General's Child Support Division (CSD) in our mission to encourage responsible parenting by promoting the involvement of both parents in their children's lives and ensuring they receive the support they need and deserve. Child Support Officers (CSOs) conduct detailed investigations, establish paternity, obtain court orders, enforce child support payments, and collaborate with state agencies and community organizations to serve Texas families.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed investigations to locate absent parents, verify employment, and determine assets.
  • Prepare documents related to legal and administrative actions for establishing or enforcing child support orders.
  • Negotiate lump‑sum payments from noncustodial parents who owe past‑due child/medical support.
  • Negotiate out‑of‑court settlements and agreements with parties.
  • Monitor child support cases and refer delinquent cases for enforcement action.
  • Document all case actions using agency tools, including the Children Are My Priority (ChAMP) system and case/court documents.
  • Review and maintain child support virtual files for accuracy in the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repository.
  • Assess cases to determine eligibility for closure.
  • Attend court to assist legal staff, as needed.
  • Research case information on the computer, including the ChAMP system.
  • Maintain current knowledge of child support policies and procedures, Texas Family Law, federal regulations, and other states' IV-D regulations.
  • Explain program policies, procedures, and regulations to customers.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Assess the validity of complaints against the IV-D program with impartiality.
  • Serve as Notary Public.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed‑upon work schedule.
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity.
Qualifications
  • Child Support Officer II
    • Education:

      Graduation from high school or equivalent.
    • Alternatively, a bachelor's degree with experience in related fields.
    • Knowledge of investigative practices and techniques.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
    • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
    • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making.
    • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.
    • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
    • Ability to work in person at the assigned OAG work location for entire work week.
    • Ability to arrange personal transportation for business‑related travel.
    • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA.
    • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
    • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
    • Typing speed of 35 wpm (typing test required at interview).
  • Child Support Officer III – All qualifications for CSO II plus:
    • One additional year of full‑time experience in a related field.
    • Skill in interviewing and negotiating.
    • Skill in using a personal computer for word‑processing and data entry/retrieval.
    • Skill in basic mathematical computations.
  • Child Support Officer IV – All qualifications for CSO III plus:
    • One additional year of full‑time experience as a Child Support Officer or equivalent position in an IV‑D agency or private sector.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university.
  • Knowledge of investigative practices and techniques.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish proficiently.
