OverviewSummary Controls Engineer III is a senior-level technical contributor responsible for designing, developing, and delivering advanced control system solutions for FW Murphy’s Special Projects team. This role leads the development of complex, custom PLC and HMI applications, working closely with cross-functional engineering teams, technical support, and customers to deliver reliable, high-performance control solutions.
As a subject matter expert, the Controls Engineer III independently owns project deliverables from concept through release, provides technical leadership on non-standard applications, and supports continuous improvement of control system architectures, tools, and standards. The role requires strong hands-on controls expertise, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to translate customer requirements into robust, scalable control solutions.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, and maintain product control firmware and display applications to meet customer requirements and project deliverables.
- Develop embedded and industrial control software using C, C++, JavaScript, IEEE 61131 programming languages, and proprietary development tools.
- Independently test and validate control solutions using physical hardware and simulation tools to ensure compliance with design intent.
- Lead technical ownership of complex or non-standard control system solutions, including special or first-of-kind applications.
- Generate and maintain project documentation, including sequences of operation, communication tables, and display maps for internal and external use.
- Develop and communicate accurate project estimates and deliver assigned deliverables on schedule with minimal supervision.
- Collaborate with engineering peers to develop complete system solutions, integrating FW Murphy technologies into cohesive control architectures.
- Share technical concepts and solution approaches with project teams to support technical direction and continuous improvement.
- Utilize Git Lab and Subversion version control systems to manage code, track issues, and support software releases.
- Use Oracle Agile PLM to generate and manage production releases.
- Support technical support teams in the resolution of customer technical issues as required.
- Participate in external customer interactions as needed to clarify requirements and address technical questions.
- Provide technical guidance and informal mentorship to less experienced engineers as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering / Electrical Engineering Technology OR related technical vocational training with extended experience of 5 years or more preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of industrial experience programming and maintaining PLC-controlled machinery or equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently design, test, and implement industrial control systems.
- Proficient understanding of industrial electrical control panel wiring and construction drawings, including commonly used drafting symbols.
- Ability to interpret functional layouts, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, end-user specifications, and theories of operation.
- Experience developing PLC and HMI applications for industrial control panels. Working knowledge of applicable industrial standards, including NEC, CEC, ISA, UL, CSA, API, and ANSI, particularly as related to hazardous locations and industrial controls.
