JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary

Purpose:

To assist and support the Bright Futures Academy at Beasley Elementary teacher in providing effective instruction and a positive teaching/learning environment for students with autism spectrum disorder.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties

* Cooperatively perform tasks under the supervision of the classroom teacher.

* Provide assistance to the classroom teacher in preparing and implementing Positive Behavior Supports and the Texas Behavior Support Initiative.

* Assist in teaching and implementing school rules and routines at the campus.

* Provide academic and functional instruction to individual students and with groups as directed by the classroom teacher on student Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals/objectives and state assessment tasks.

* Escort and supervise students throughout the building and across various instructional and non instructional settings as assigned.

* Collect data on student goals/objectives as directed by the classroom teacher or campus staff.

* Performs assigned supervision of students during all times.

* Perform assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, clothing routines and self-help skills as applicable.

* Appropriately manage students physically, verbally, and non-verbally who may be out of emotional/behavioral control.

* Teach and practice social skills in alignment with age/grade/program expectations.

* Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.

* Attend meetings and professional development presentations (e.g. trainings, IEP meetings, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.

* Confer with teachers and campus staff on a regular basis for the purpose of accountability and assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

* Attendance at work is an essential function.

* Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

Education/Certification:

* High school diploma or G.E.D.

* 30 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR three years of full-time work-related experience with special needs students in an instructional or child care facility

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Constructive and cooperative attitude toward the duties of the aide, the school, the staff and the students (ages 3-5th grade) who have autism spectrum disorder

* Ability to read, write and implement instructions designated by teachers/supervisors in order to meet IEP goals and individualized support plans

* Ability to follow directives and to perform tasks necessary to ensure the safety of students at all times

* Ability to communicate positively with students, both verbally and non-verbally

* Ability to assist students with autism in meeting functional needs, including toileting, feeding, and other personal care supports as required

* CPI certified or ability to obtain/maintain CPI certification

* Knowledge of Structured TEACCH methodology or experience working in a structured learning environment

* Exhibits patience and a supportive approach when working with students with autism, including during challenging behaviors or high stress situations.

Equipment Used:
Computer, copy machine and other standard office equipment, audiovisual equipment, lifting equipment, special learning devices and other specialized/adaptive equipment used by students.

Working Conditions

Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Communicating (verbal and written), understanding verbal instructions, reasoning skills, reading, instructing, emotional control. Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds), occasional heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) and positioning students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through appropriate restraint techniques, assisting non-ambulatory students, lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking, standing, repeated bending, specific visual requirements (activity sufficient for reading/writing), specific hearing requirements (activity sufficient to monitor children's safety), traveling (daily, to many settings on and off campus).
