Are you a nursing student slated to graduate in December 2026 or May 2027? This day-shift extern position is based on the 48-bed Medical & Renal Unit at Med Star Franklin Square Medical Center. You will gain experience caring for a variety of adult medical-surgical patients with diagnoses including, but not limited to: UTI, cellulitis, change in mental status, pancreatitis, COPD, diabetes mellitus, end stage renal disease, COVID-19 and infectious disease.

Extern experience in this unit can open pathways into post-graduation specialties.

As a Nurse Extern, you will work alongside an RN mentor and care team, providing holistic and quality care to our patients. You will be paired with your RN mentor for at least 50% of your clinical time, receiving coaching, hands-on learning, and assimilation into the practice environment. Your assigned RN mentor will help you develop critical thinking skills needed to increase your confidence as a nursing professional.

In addition, a nursing professional development specialist will support you to ensure your learning needs are met as you gain the best clinical experience possible.

The summer cohort will be a full-time 10-week long program. During the cohort, student nurse externs will follow their preceptor’s schedule, including rotating weekend shifts. Externs will work three 12-hour shifts for a total of 36 to 40 hours per week.

Before applying for this position, please be sure you can commit to the following:

• A full-time commitment of three 12-hour shifts each week during the entirety of the summer cohort.
• The ability to follow your assigned preceptor’s schedule.

Time off will be permitted during the summer, provided the requested dates do not fall within the first two weeks of the program, nor on scheduled educational sessions. Requested time off cannot exceed one week.

Externs may be invited to remain in the extern role past the summer cohort. If the offer to remain is accepted, externs can expect to work in a flexible per diem schedule of just 16 hours bi-weekly, with a maximum of 12 hours each week. Externs must be in good standing to remain employed past the summer cohort.

$20.12 per hour

Active enrollment in an accredited RN program; must be graduating in December 2026 or May 2027.

No clinical experience outside of nursing school is required.

CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification by the Maryland Board of Nursing is required; BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification.
