Instructional Assistant
FLSA: Non‑exempt
Terms:
Salary in accordance with the district scale. Work year: 182 days per academic year as set by the Board.
Provides classroom teaching assistance: reinforcing skills, monitoring in‑school suspension or detention, completing roll call and student counts, administering make‑up tests.
Assists teachers with academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities.
Sets up classroom for special activities, prepares materials, sets up charts.
Performs remedial instruction to reinforce learning as initiated by teacher.
Works with students requiring individual attention, reads to children, listens to reactions, suggests improvements.
Monitors groups of students engaged in drawing, writing, independent study or similar work.
Observes and assists individual students dealing with difficulties.
Distributes and collects materials, sets up instructional projects, operates audio‑visual equipment.
Supervises playground activities, monitors students in cafeteria, rest periods, during transitions.
Performs clerical tasks: light typing, data entry, routine sorting and filing, posting to ledgers.
Types, completes and files various records and forms.
Collects incoming monies for field trips, school pictures, other fees; prepares receipts.
Arranges field trips, permission slips, transportation, speaks/presents, accompanies class.
Orders supplies, schedules tutoring, escorts students to other areas of the school.
Operates general office equipment: typewriter, computer, copier, laminator, calculator.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
Education & Experience:
High school graduate with passing score on Para Pro Assessment Test for Instructional Assistants, or a 2‑year college degree, or 60 college credit hours. Knowledge of child growth and development.
Knowledge: Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation; departmental policies and procedures; modern office equipment; clerical functions. Knowledge in classroom instruction.
Skills:
Use of general office equipment; written and verbal communication, organization, basic math, telephone skills; interaction with co‑workers, students, staff in a courteous manner; assistance to teachers in classroom situations.
Working Conditions:
Office environment, exposure to students; lifting up to 25 lbs; occasional local travel; no overnight travel; operation of standard office equipment.
