Job Summary
The Phlebotomist II receives orders for laboratory testing, collects blood from patients of any age or status, and issues appropriate paperwork to the Floyd lab or outside for processing. He/she maintains the laboratory in an efficient working state and performs lab procedures while ensuring quality control.
Major Responsibilities- Quality Work
- Consistently obtains high quality specimens by venipuncture.
- Performs special procedures as needed.
- Consistently obtains high quality specimens by capillary procedure.
- Collects blood cultures with contamination rate below established goal.
- Collects timed specimens appropriately.
- Collects outpatients in a timely manner with waiting kept to a minimum.
- Establishes positive patient identification.
- Follows all Continuous Quality Improvement standards.
- Ensures timely collection of all specimens by placing advance orders in proper slots on the collection board and by collecting stats within established turnaround times.
- Correctly labels all specimens and ensures that collections are not missed due to errors and echoes from the computer system.
- Keeps the phlebotomy area clean and stocked with supplies.
- Follows state, OSHA, and other agency regulations, performs special procedures, and assists the lab aide when necessary.
- Handles specimens properly and operates accurately.
- Processes all specimens quickly.
- Handles cancellation of orders properly.
- Accurately logs collection and received times into the lab computer system.
- Displays cooperation in daily work relationships.
- Maintains a good working relationship with technologists and supervisors.
- Displays professional attitude while in the phlebotomy area.
- Modifies work schedule as needed.
- Follows hospital policy for attendance, punctuality, lunches, and breaks.
- Promotes organizational development.
- Attends all meetings.
- Assists new employees.
- Effectively utilizes allotted time and resources.
PBT (ASCP) or equivalent
Education RequiredHigh School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a formal training program in phlebotomy. Completion of departmental clinical evaluation checklist.
Experience RequiredAt least one year of experience.
Physical Requirements and Working ConditionsFull range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination. Standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries weight up to 50 pounds. Ability to distinguish letters, numbers, and symbols with vision and hearing within normal range to respond to code alerts and equipment alarms. Work‑related stress due to volume and time constraints with irregular working hours.
Scheduleand Pay
Hours per week: 36.
Schedule:
Friday, Saturday & Sunday 19:00‑07:30. Pay range: $17.65 – $26.50 per hour.
