SummaryThe Assistant Nurse Manager practices at the level of an expert practitioner of nursing, as defined by Benner, P. (1984). The nurse demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems. In addition to clinical leadership on the unit, the Clinical Nurse IV serves as a role model, resource, and hospital-wide consultant to staff and participates in endeavors to increase nursing knowledge.
Incumbents are accountable to the North Carolina Board of Nursing for practicing within the scope of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act.
- EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Coordinates, designs and implements educational programs to meet identified learning needs of staff, patients, and families. Promotes staff participation in continuing education, orientation, competency, in-service and staff development offerings. Develops and implements competency initiatives. Serves as a specialty consultant in educational program design. Contributes to patient education materials. Promotes professional growth of self and staff. Provides educational experiences for students.
- EVALUATION - Evaluates patient progress and revises plans accordingly. Maintains accountability for carrying out components of the plan. Ensures care on the unit complies with policies and procedures.
- IMPLEMENTATION - Promotes diversity, open communication, teamwork, and exceptional service. Ensures appropriate care and services for patients, clients, and families for the assigned shift. Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration in care planning to achieve outcomes. Coordinates care with interdisciplinary team members. Demonstrates clinical expertise and shares knowledge with staff. Uses the nursing process to provide quality care. Assesses learning needs and arranges resources to meet them.
Performs bedside point of care testing as required for the care plan. - LEADERSHIP - Supports recruitment and retention efforts. Provides feedback to managers and directors to aid in hiring, promotion, transfer, and termination decisions. Gives staff ongoing performance feedback and supports professional goal setting. Promotes continuous feedback and implements best practices for staff retention.
- ASSESSMENT - Synthesizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities. Addresses physical, psychosocial, and educational needs. Assesses discharge needs and develops relationships with families to support advocacy. Works with the manager to identify specialized needs for the patient population.
- PLANNING - Establishes standards of excellence and ensures consistent implementation by staff. Provides input on program development, space needs and fiscal realities. Ensures appropriate staffing and skill mix to meet patient care needs. Uses clinical and financial information to support budget goals. Collaborates on strategies to improve revenue and manage resources. Ensures regulatory standards are met or exceeded.
- RESEARCH AND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT - Evaluates applicable research and promotes changes in standards of care. Guides research development, shares knowledge with colleagues, and leads performance improvement initiatives.
- Education Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing. - Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Current BCLS certification. - Professional Experience Requirements: 3-5 years of RN experience in an acute care setting.
