Position: PERMIT TECHNICIAN

JOB SUMMARY

Provides technical support for the building inspection and permitting process. Assists customer inquiries, applications, and payment of permit fees. Assists with processing the city beer and wine and taxicab licenses, and schedules service order inspections to facilitate citizens getting their utilities.

Responsibilities
  • Promptly and courteously responds to phone calls, answering questions accurately, making appropriate referrals to inspectors, and relaying messages to staff.
  • Accurately enters and maintains building permit data to ensure easy retrieval of information and enable valid reporting.
  • Accurately record building permit data to facilitate inspections, payment collections, utility hook-ups, etc.
  • Perform typing, filing, process mail, and other duties to support smooth office operations.
  • Consistently follow cash management processes as outlined by the Cash Management Policy and Procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a related field.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the building permits the approval process.
  • Knowledge of relevant state and local regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of a multi-line telephone and a two-way radio.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The work is sedentary and requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The following physical abilities are required:
  • Grasping:
    Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling:
    Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.

    Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

    Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

    Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Standing:
    Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Talking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity:
    Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Walking:
    Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
