Overview
The State of Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is seeking to hire a part-time Buildings And Grounds Patrol Officer in the Safety and Security Department.
Schedule:
Thursday - Sunday, Part-time (32 hours per week). First shift (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM).
Location:
287 West Street in Rocky Hill, CT. Work Environment:
Office/On-site.

At a state institution, university or school, or facility this class is accountable for providing basic security services designed to ensure the control and safety of clients, students, employees and the visiting public.
Examples of Duties- Enforces regulations relating to parking and traffic control as established by the assigned agency; directs traffic on state property; issues tickets for violations; gives information and assistance to visitors.
- Guards entrances and exits to prevent trespass, vandalism, theft and other violations; performs routine vehicle and foot patrol duties and monitors security and alarm systems to detect theft and other criminal acts.
- Provides security escorts; provides first aid when necessary; performs dispatching and record-keeping functions at a desk post.
- Assists in maintaining order among patients in a state hospital; assists in searching for missing patients; may oversee activities of fellow officers as designated.
- Assists in fire prevention and fire fighting activities; performs related duties as required.
Skills:
interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills. Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency with judgment and discretion.
Any experience or training which would provide the skills and abilities indicated above.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience working in the field of security or public safety
- Experience with face-to-face interactions with the public
- Experience conducting vehicle/foot patrols, preventing trespassing
- Experience writing incident reports
- Experience being dispatched to calls for service and using radio communication systems
- Experience working with people with substance abuse, mental health, or anger issues
- Experience interacting or working with veterans
- Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
- Incumbents may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.
A thorough background investigation may be conducted before appointment, in addition to reference checks.
Physical RequirementsMust have general good health and sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity. A physical examination may be required.
Working ConditionsMay be exposed to outdoor conditions, prolonged walking/standing during patrols, and potential hazards associated with security work.
