State of Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Health Care Center located at 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT.

Schedule:

Part‑Time, 24 hours per week, 3rd Shift (10:45 pm to 7:15 am). Shift and weekend differential available. Position number: 3117.

Each Licensed Practical Nurse permanently assigned to the second or third shift may be eligible for an annual “retention” bonus of $600, paid in July and December after completing one year of service.

• Assist doctors and nurses in general care and treatment of individuals.
• Measure doses and administer medications, including insulin injections.
• Document medications using appropriate forms.
• Perform narcotic counts.
• Check and may administer intravenous medications.
• Report changes in individuals to doctors.
• Ensure restraints are applied correctly.
• Transcribe doctors’ medication orders.
• Dispense certain medications in the doctor’s absence.
• Apply topical medication.
• Take and chart temperatures, pulses and respirations.
• Perform simple nursing treatments.
• Monitor general individual needs including personal hygiene.
• Report on individual conditions and behavior.
• Keep the unit safe and healthy.
• Administer enemas or suppositories.
• Perform Foley catheterization care.
• Orient individuals concerning medications and their use.
• May perform emergency first aid.
• May drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings.
• Perform related duties as required.

License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing, or a Multistate or Compact Licensed Practical Nurse license.

• Experience working in a Skilled Nursing Facility.
• Experience utilizing Department of Public Health and Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulations in a Long‑Term Care Facility.
• Experience working with Veteran population.
• Experience working with dementia patients.
• Experience documenting in electronic Health Record (eMAR).
• Experience deescalating and calming clients/patients.

Work may involve shift work, weekend duties, and exposure to a diverse veteran population. The role requires adherence to infection control practices, medication administration protocols, and competency in electronic health record documentation.
